i dont really do WIP but I am interested in your thoughts on how i can develop this
first of all this will not be a realistic impression more of an artistic impression
the concept is a large mining facility on a distant jovian moon the moon is of coarse an alpine world a mix between newzealand and switzerland im going for ;D
(http://i36.tinypic.com/20h126e.jpg)
a very rough first image still nedds alot of work im thinking i have to increase the size of the trees plus a few more variants in species
(http://i35.tinypic.com/5ppiyu.jpg)
enjoy and appreciate your feedback ;)
Hi there,
I don´t think you need bigger trees, only if you want to make your mountains look small.
I can´t imagine yet where that arc structure is going to come in.
Is it supposed to be something like a spacecraft?
or an architectural structure embedded in the ground?
Anyway, I really like your rock colours, and the combination of "alpine" and sci-fi is promising!
best regards,
Jan
its sort of an advanced mining wheel that digs into the ground and extracts metals etc im probably going to make it into a wheel
Clouds and sense of scale are outstanding. Agree that a bit of variation in the trees would be good - perhaps tweak breakup so the distribution isn't quite so uniform in the foreground.
The arc looks like it was modeled in MAX using the Greeble plugin. That is a fun plugin to play with.
i rendered this before i got your feedback but im glad because i increased the tree size and I like this much better also messed around with the clouds abit more what do you think?
I will work on getting more variation in the trees tonight a few broadleafs nedd to be thrown in me thinks^^
(http://i33.tinypic.com/csv3d.jpg)
p.s yup it is the greeble plugin hehe ;D
This is a very nice render. Good job!
I think this scale for the trees is better.
The trees are better, but I think I prefer the original clouds/lighting, as it gives a greater sense of distance, since the far mountains are a bit sharper.
here is a rough concept getting some objects in im ditching the mining equipment I i dont want to ruin those lovely mountains lol no but it just didnt fit with the scene. Im borrowing this concept from one of the SGU episodes with the alian built planet I loved that tower so i decided to model out a weird tower similar to Orthanc but scifi hehe ;D
Ant suggestions on other models ships etc?
Im also experimenting with including the mother planet so i quickly photoshoped this planet I am in the middle of painting a gas giant map for this scene so this will not be the end result (thank god) ^^.
Im also going to have the planet a lot fainter so it looms more in the sky
I took the clouds out just to speed the rendering up will add them back in later

appreciate the feedback guys
The trees look way better now, but I would delete the ones on top of the mountain on the left. It's a matter of taste, I know, but they look kind of lost to me.
Agree with Hannes re the trees on top. Tower and planet look great - nicely composed. I actually think this render looks great without the clouds.
that can easily be done ;D
tonight im going to render the scene rhat has a lot more variation in the vegetation I have edited a lot of the leaf textures also so it looks alot more realistic :)
any other suggestions guys?
what about more buildings vehicles etc?
I think it would be a shame to add much more, as it might spoil the composition. But *perhaps* a line of aircraft from somewhere near the tip of the tower, diagonally away towards the middle of the planet. There isn't much scope for land vehicles unless you change the tree pops.
here is the finished gas giant concept that I am going to incorporate into the alpine image its an image in its own so i thought i would post it up ;D
Its a combo between 3 maps on of saturn one of jupitor and one of Matt Attards maps from DA (thanks bro!) also did alot of airbrushing too to mix it all up
(http://i38.tinypic.com/35iqix3.png)
I would indeed loose the top trees, but I did like the clouds. Why not put a spherical building on top of that mountain where the trees still stand. Like a radar post, growing out of the top. A bit weird of coarse. I think the tower lacks definition, it's very spiky and simple. Perhaps some 'balconies' from which 'things' can be launched or dropped, or whatever.
I will see what i can cook up hehe thanks ;D
this is a bit of an update changed the angle of the tower added some extra plants and colour variation put the old clouds back in added in an extra building and added the gas giant in
im still not happy with the trees they look to noisy and flat any idea on how to get them looking better?
increase the gi maybe?
What's your AA setting? Might need to increase it (or post-sharpen less).
- Oshyan
its at 6 but i have changed the veg anyway with some better quality models I have cooked up ;D
Why don't you thin them out, leave a few patches of these trees, scatter some (huge) rocks, maybe a scouting SciFi terrain truck among the rocks/trees. And you need a little fill in light for the circular building I think. That's my idea, anyway.
I don't really like the circular building, as it's too central and too big - it shifts the balance of the composition. But hey, it's your planet ;)
Heh. Greeble :)
I'm looking forward to this.
Looks really cool ;)
Regards,
Terje

oooh ! gorgeous render ^^
here is one with some nicer looking trees. I think the big broadleaf tree has too greener leaves so i Will edit them a little I added some rocks from advice from dune and I Think they fit into the scene really well I also changed the clouds yet again But my final render will probably have the orginal since they seem to be the best so far
any more crits are more than welcome ;D
(http://i34.tinypic.com/14jvv3t.png)
here is another approach i have been working on. the clouds are a photo and post composed in with photoshop
also painted in some rain effects to add to the mood
the base image is one of m,y early renders the final if i chose to do it like this will have the modded veg etc
(http://i37.tinypic.com/1zfljt2.jpg)
Dude, these are fantastic. Keep 'em coming.
I like the last one too :)
Not so much your style but nice image!
here is a small crop of the final trees Im much happier with them now hehe ;D
(http://i35.tinypic.com/j83878.jpg)
their are 4 different species
Do you think the mountain looks to barren maybe add some more green on it?
those last two renders are frickin' awesome :)
i particularly like the tower in the background, it has a mysterious feel to it.
I'd say add some more green to the mountain, maybe not a whole lot, but do add some.

here is another photo cloud concept
Very nice drama in this one with the clouds.
and here is another version with more bananaish colours and tones ;D
(http://i37.tinypic.com/2dl0niv.jpg)
I am liking this style more now since Im using more oranges and pinks :)
I am now rendering the final image @ 2500x1137 detail 1 aa 9 gi 2,3
cloud samples 140 atmo (for both) 94 samples I will leave it now for a few days to render ::) :P!
in post processing im thinking about adding in a small space cruiser that's been pre rendered in tg2 also I am thinking of composing 2 final versions one with stormy billowy clouds the other with much warmer colours similar to above
I think the pre-bananaish version looked much better, IMHO.
I like this a lot!
Much more in your style. I agree with Frank and I like this very much also.

Thanks Frank so do you prefer the one with the postworked clouds?
as a piece of art? yes I do prefer the postworked clouds.
I know you don't care too much about the challenge in making TG2 render clouds like these, as long as you get to the desired end result the method doesn't matter.
I think you could make clouds in TG2 that look like this, but you need to invest time to get there :)
Cheers,
Frank
here is the finished piece Rendered in 9 hours just hadn't got around to finishing it off since im heavily involved in my school production and hadn't had time

looking good!
Very nice result! But I would probably have left out the rain.
Exceptional work, although I could have lived without the extreme highlight at the top of the tower. By the way, do you know what happened to the little film that you were contributing to a while back?
Very nice metal banana :)
Love that image, well done!!!
Cheers,
Frank
cheers fellaz!
@ domdib
it sort of fell through i sent all my concepts off and sort of lost contact :-\
Rain??? How did you do that?
You're very creative, WB. Nice. I'd like to go exploring there.
WB, i'm speechless :) ;)
your sci-fi renders are fantastically awesome. :) :)
outstanding work it's looks real and convincing! upload the final version to deviantart and i'll add this to my favorites :D
Edit: haha it has already been uploaded! +watch for you my friend awesome deviations!

I was going to ask if those were TG, then I read underneath LOL. Great work. I think you have a career in this. Good luck.
wow thanks for all the encouraging comments guys i really them^^ ;D
