Hi All,
SIGGRAPH 2007 is being held here in San Diego starting tomorrow. I'll be there first thing in the morning.
I know Renderosity and Eon-Software will be there. Not sure if Planetside will be there, but I'll be looking for them just in case.
Let me know if you'll also be attending.
I wish I could....too far for me....
ditto
Too far for me to
Anyone want to buy me a plane ticket? ;D

Planetside doesn't have a booth there or anything. You may run into Matt though, tall guy, red hair :-).

Jo

Heheh, I'll keep my eye out. ;D
OK, just got back from Siggraph 2007, and I have to say, what an amazing display of technology! There are things that are coming out soon that are simply magical. To see and try them in person, was even more amazing. I saw true 3D screens, high resolution/HDR screens running at 240 Hz (perfect for graphic work). They had plenty of real time panorama cams, and software, and some poor company is trying to 3d map the entire planet, including buildings (and it looks like they may be successful). I didn't see much for procedural modelling apps, which I was really hoping for.
I did look for Matt, but alas, there were thousands of people there, so no luck. Though there was no Planetside booth, I did see plenty of other "rival" apps and their booths, but I will honestly say TG2 still reigns on top when it comes to landscape generation.
Well that's good to here we're on the right side, so to say ;D
It's a pity SIGGRAPH is way too far for me to visit. I'd love to see all those amazing (future) developments.
Wish it would be here in The Netherlands sometime :'(
Did you take any pictures by accident?
Martin
Next year it will be in Los Angeles :-( That's a horrible drive!
You know it would be great if they had Siggraph chapter meetings in other countries so that people who are unable to attend the main Siggraph in the US could attend one of the Chapter meetings, this is some I believe the IEEE dose and the may be reasons why Siggraph doesnt do this, still it would be nice.
Regards to you

Um... what's with the big Western theme? This year San Diego, and next Los Angeles. Couldn't they stick it, oh, I dunno, somewhere along the 45th parallel and really close to the Mississippi? :P
Yea, I agree, everyone else gets left out. Alot of it likely has to do with most of the big name graphics companies are based in CA (and they were all at the convention with huge, expensive booths).
However I did read on siggraph's main site that they also have smaller, though more focused, conventions all over the world.

Recently it has also been in Boston and San Antonio, a while further back it was in New Orleans. It's in LA every other year. AFAIK they're going to continue rotating the location, there was some talk of just sticking with LA a while back.

There are SIGGRAPH chapters all over the world, and they can have meetings when they want. I've tried contacting my local chapter, the NZ one is based in the town nearest me, but no luck. I also belong to the IEEE and they seem to be much more active and there seems to be a lot going on in my region. None of it quite what interests me I have to say, but the IEEE does cover a wide range of fields.

yea I wanted to go to the Boston one but I was down on the MIT campus that day for an extracurricular thing to bad I was so close but yet so far.
can't you get the conference proceedings ?
I spent several times at the SIGGRAPH but if I wanted to implement something I anyway needed a corner and several coffee before I understood an article in the proceedings...
Later I ordered the proceedings only because from Munich it's pretty expensive to go to the SIGGRAPH ...
But it's nice if you're just round the corner...
Well on the up sode we have the Oktoberfest :-)
Best,
Hansi
Hi Hansi,
The proceedings are great. They're really, really cheap too, at least if you're a SIGGRAPH member. It's about $70 US for the full conference proceedings package, and $25 or so to join SIGGRAPH ( that's for the SIGGRAPH membership, not the full ACM one ).
I reckon if you were keen the conference DVDs ( not the ones which come with the proceedings ) would be a good buy. They record all the sessions. I've always thought they were a bit expensive, but they have some big advantages. For one thing, you can skip over the boring bits :-). You are also less likely to fall asleep than you are when it's the 3rd day of the conference and you're sitting in a dark, warm room listening to someone with a monotonous voice. Even if you're at the conference it can often be hard to see all the things you want.
Regards,
Jo
Hello Jo,
thanks a lot.
Didn't know that the proceedings are so cheap...
I'll go and order them...
something for cold winter days ... :-)
