Title: Devils-Cube Cavern
Post by: DocCharly65 on August 12, 2015, 03:23:59 AM
Time to try something new...
My first cave - and the name? Why Devils-Cube Cavern?
I modelled it with more than 60 displaced cubes... built like an igloo.

From outside (the bright spot in the middle is an emergency exit at the rear of the brigands and pirates  8)  ;)

[attach=1]

From inside

[attach=2]

(quite dark inside but that will be neccessary for the story in the animation - I have already planes with it... again...  ;)  )

As usual "optimized" for fast rendering in 720p for my animation plans. Perhaps I'll try some HQ renders as stills too.
The mushrooms are from TF3DM, the lizzard and some moss is from archive3D and the rest of the plants XFrog

Looks nice. Good idea to show us both inside and outside.

Effective use of displaced cubes - but 60!!! could it not have been done with less.  I admire your perseverance...

Wow this is really cool! I like it a lot.
Would be good to understand how you did it ::)

... as I said , archonforest - like an igloo  :)

I had a little help since I got that Voronoi Cracks tgc by mhaze.
Combined with just a powerfractal... Really very simple.
[attachimg=2]

after 3 layers of cubes just for later times (if I'd like planting coniferous forest) a roof on it ...
[attach=3]

I admit that I just was too non-talented to use big TG-objects and procedural solutions. I would have needed weeks to learn and to test. This solution was done in 1 day.  ;)

But before starting to animate I will have to do a little more detail work on the powerfractals because I have too much needles in detailed views.

Wow this is awesome! Cool idea. The "from the inside" shot pretty much looks real to me if you upped your atmosphere samples and added a little variation to the trees and veggie colors over all... but very nicely done!

Very interesting. Thx.
I think I have that file so I will give a try :D

Great idea... Love the inside looking out... With better lighting, so the internal structure is a bit more visible, this will be superb!
Well done!

Me too. The second one looks very mystical.

That is a lot of cubes. Very clever.

Me too. The view from the inside is cool.

Looks quite nice. But the quality of the displacement on the cave walls seems to be low for some reason. Any idea why?

Thanks guys  :)

Last week and the weekend I took time for a couple of tinkering...

Higher haze density including high sample rate for some slight sunbeams
Some changes on the "rock-cubes"
Some correction on the size ratio of the plants
Some new plants (trees in some variation and some ivy)
Last but not least I gave the images a new story.
(also by doing this I found the only "legal" way , dear Oshyan  ;) , to add a second light source inside the cavern  ;D  )

The Storytellers Hollow (quite more positive, right?)  :)

Nice addition to the big movie, Nils. I have to say that the displacement on the rocks may be a little less or more diverse. What if you replace this setup with a rock-populated sphere, and then disable the sphere? Might be a lot easier. Too bad you can't yet populate the displacable objects. Vector displacement map is another possibility, and another option is an inverted sphere: http://www.planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,18829.msg183279.html#msg183279 (http://www.planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,18829.msg183279.html#msg183279)

But I love the view from inside!

EDIT: Ah, I just noticed page 2 with less displacement. Cool!

Liking this a lot and having been reminded by Dune of the sphere solution I am allowing myself inspiration from your project to re start an old idea, now that  we can force displacement on imported objects...woo hoo..Well Done.

Thanks  :)

Ulco, I remember your cavern. In that time I was absolute beginner and thought I never would do something like that...  ;)

Good luck bobbystahr  :)

Meanwhile I have to care about the environment... in the animation somebody must be able to get to the cavern on his small wheels (while he grumbles to himself that constantly grass hangs between the rollers)  ;)
I will darken the fern on the grass and reduce its tranclucency. I thought about a path but I don't want one here.

The camera path will start a bit more from the right direction... next long way to go.

Good luck bobbystahr  :)

Looking sorta good so far. Using a obj/tgo I made as a population object on a displaced Sphere...my previous was with the inverted Sphere and had not a lot of luck with that.
Maybe try your technique as well as I really like the roughness you get from the displaced Cubes

Time to get the protagonists of "my plan" involved...  :)

...the morning had dawned, the mists had cleared away and the little robot wobbled on the grass while he complained about the arduous path by vociferous beeping and whistling... he would have preferred to remain silent, if he had known who or what awaited him in the cave on this peaceful glade.

???  :o

Nice.How long until the animation? :)
Title: Re: Devils-Cube Cavern

...and after 9h rendertime the view from outside the cave into the morning sun...

[attach=1]

Sorry Kadri ... This is just a brake from all the many renderjobs at the pool with the bike.
Also the Paraducks are still running.

So It will take some months until I can begin to develope the animation...

I like the last POV.
