No sci fi stuff this time. I've been working on this for some time now to get everything like I want it to be. Sea foam patterns by Oleg.
This is rendered with TG4 Alpha, so the clouds are the new ones and there is a subtle star burst effect.
Great scene, Hannes. Great water, great foam, great vessel, great mood.
I am very impressed from the light shining through the sails.
Do you think it makes sense to add a little blur to the birds? Something seems wrong with them and think it's the missing movement.

Nice idea. I'll see if I can apply some natural looking fake motion blur to them.
Wonderful scene, very atmospheric with a great sea and the foam around the boat is spot on.
Terrific scene!! I love the light, and everything else. Except for the birds; they look like parakeets (at sea?). Some blur would do them good ;) but I wonder how you would go about that...
That's impressive! The effort you put into it really shows.
(But also think the birds need to look more like seagulls).,
Almost like a scene straight out of a movie. The new clouds and sun glare give it some serious realism.
Thanks!!
OK, I rendered a mask for the birds and tried to create some fake motion blur using Photoshop's smudge tool.
I have an object sequence of the birds, but since TG doesn't support object motion blur, this doesn't help.
And yes, maybe seagulls would be better. Are there any seagull models in the file section? Couldn't find any...
This is fantastic! I've worked with oceans a lot but never in Terragen. Great job with that. Ships make an excellent 3d subject. A while ago I spent 6 weeks rigging simulated... rigging for a ship. That's the longest I've ever gone without hitting a render button.
I'd imagine a gull would be easy enough to get hold of on Turbosquid or similar.

I thought there might have been an old thread using a technique within Terragen that was used to blur Airplane Props or Helicopter Blades?
Also, I found a Seagull along with some other Birds. However, it is 3dsmax format only.

Thanks for the link, I'll take a look. The technique you're mentioning doesn't really work here since each bird has to be blurred differently.
Something to do with the object angles being all different per object?
An absolutely beautiful render Hannes! The V3 clouds are really fine and the light is gorgeous. Oleg's sea foam is nicely used, too bad he's not using much TG these days.
Thanks!!
I downloaded the seagull, imported it into 3ds Max, applied some better textures and posed the wings (simply by moving and rotating some vertices) to get four different flying poses.
I then created four populations (free floating) at different altitudes. Here is a cropped test render
First class render Hannes. I love it :)
Hannes, i think we talked about this earlier but this plugin can be handy sometimes.
A little on the expensive side but it helped me on some projects.

Thanks, Kadri! Yes I know this plug in, but it wouldn't help in this case, since I would have to render a sequence to tell RSMB what's happening to create some postwork motion blur. The only more or less satisfying solution would be native object motion blur in TG.
However, looking at my smudge blurred birds, I have to say, that I don't like it very much. So, I think I can live with the static birds...

Same for me, Hannes!
The new seagulls look much better!
They even look good without blurring.
I really curious for the complete big render.
It is subjective but i have no problem with the birds without blur too actually.
Me neither!
The first render is awesome as a still. At full screen, the light and shadow are wonderful. Great render!
These seagulls are way better. Their tails may not be perfect, but on this distance it looks really good.
Great work Hannes :)
I particularly like the rays in the atmosphere near the sails. I suppose you used a thin cloud for that?
The cumulus clouds are really nice too!
I find sunset cumulus still quite hard to do, but I think these are the best I have seen so far. Great!

Thanks a lot, Martin,
yes, it's a thin cloud.
And I'm
so glad, that you like the cumulus cloud, since it's made of one of
your files. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Just WOW
Thanks Bobby!
I'm rendering the (hopefully) final render at the moment. I think it takes another 10 hours from now.
Magnificent render. Reminds me some of the paintings of N.C. Wyeth.

I find myself hoping my computer will
even run TG4 even more seeing results here...just paid property taxes so there goes my new computer into some politicians pocket...may still be able to afford the update but won't know till mid July...a minor cash festival gig in the offing.
Killer render! Sharp, but not overly so.
Noticed the angular rigging in the bow (ropes have visible angles), not sure if you can smooth those out a bit.
Nice!

Yes, that's bothering me too, but I think I'll take it as it is... :(
TG4 has basically the same system requirements as TG3. The Realtime Preview will require more resources to perform well, but if your system ran TG3 ok, it will run TG4 OK under the same circumstances. And rendering will actually be faster in many cases (more on that soon).

Very pretty! I really like! :D
I agree..............fantastic render. :)
I can't wait to see the final, Hannes! As a matter of fact you inspired me to do some wave work again ;)

Great, Ulco!!!!
Well, here is the final. Basically it's only the gulls that are different from the original image. I realised that I forgot to check GISD for the first image, so I did it here, but there's not too much difference.
And I checked AA bloom here.
Hope you like it.
I do, it's terrific! How did you do the foam at the ship's sides?

There is a cloud layer right on the water surface masked by a painted shader where the ship touches the water. Quite simple. I had to do lots of (cropped) test renders until I had the right cloud fractal settings.
I imagined something like that, or painted in later :P Good thing is you don't need high quality, in fact low quality might work better I found in the past; more drop like.

Right!!!
This is a stellar image.... but, as with most sailing ships with full sail I've been dis-satisfied the the sails texture not following the ripples in the actual sail. In Imagine we had/have a thing called states where you made the object and locked the texture to the object. Then either procedural or image based textures followed the shapes you made and could be locked in for animation purposes where you morphed from one state to another....but other than that nit pick I freakin' love this image.

Not sure what you mean, Bobby. As far as I can see the texture follows the deformation of the sails.

O K...I've had coffee now...upon 2nd look I see you are correct...how were the sails mapped?

I don't know, Bobby. I purchased this model a few years ago, and the sails were already mapped.
Very nice, especially the light and ship interaction. :)
Nicely done.. all of it !!

Fantastic render.
