Title: Some new WIP's
Post by: Dune on December 02, 2017, 06:28:30 AM
I had to do these 'pre-versions' before a very tight deadline, so a lot of loose ends and low-res still, which I will address later for finals. Some Dutch landscape to be altered.

Good rustic landscape. Especially for WIP. Just like in Russia! The only thing, it seems to me, that people are too small. I compared it to the grass. Especially seen in the "eindconcept vanaf Del laag.jpg".

Thank you, Denis. Yes, I thought so too, but it's all the good sizes. The 'big grass' patches are reeds, and they can get 2m high. I may have to use a different obj or more variations of reed. The white flowerheads all over that raised body of land (dike) are too uniform and just one species, and they may well be too big (old object I hastily threw in). Water lilies are bad also.
But I certainly need to address that size issue.

Very nice renders Ulco. They look real.

Agree w.Denis on scales but if the white flowerheads are yarrow they could easily be that large here. Like, as always, where this is going.

Really fine vegetation work Ulco.  I agree about the sense of scale as well, even if the measurements are scaled accurately, that doesn't always mean it 'looks' right. Is that your basic river setup from your NWDA offering?

Very realistic, great veg. Last ones my favourite

Great images. I love how you can see your style in them. I'd love to poke about there or go for a picnic :)
There's something oddly repetitive about the Cow Parsley/Yarrow? (white flowers) in the second image.

I agree, these are great, WIP or not. I especially like eindconcept-west-oost laag.jpg

Thanks guys. I just had a few hours to finish these, and had to resort to some quick pops. The whites are cow parsley, but only one pop of bad manufacture  :P Same as the lily pads. That will be improved!
The terrain is based on a blue-red heightmap from AHN (unfortunately they have a flexible system, where the reds change when you change the close up area, so it's hard to stich a high res map from several views), and I added some 4000x3000px greyscale maps for the 'new' ditch versions (softer edges), raised dike, and the heathland terrain.
So no river setup, Doug.
For the people living there this is indeed a nice terrain to stroll through, as it's a few hectares surrounded by masses of industry and glasshouse cultivation! See this (bad mapping too, still).

Amazing, especially when considering the tight time frame.

Well, I had the overall setup ready, but not the detailed renders; they had to be done in half a day.

Anyway, some improvement with new cow parsleys. Still have to replace the grey chunk on the left with a real greenhouse and a house, and perhaps some more stuff. Some swallows over the water maybe....

Much better with the new Cow Parsleys. Some of the repetition (still noticeable in the nearer ones ) may be natural anyway. What's the purple flower?
And are those your "Dunes Reeds"? They are my "goto" reeds pack :)

I think it's one of the reeds pack, not sure though. The purple one is Lythrum salicaria (Purple loosestrife). Yeah, I noticed the repetition, so I can always make a third version and mix more carefully.

EDIT: 2 recent versions

Like em both and thanks for the memory jog; I have the Purple Loosestrife from Walli, must remember to use it.

Ordinary landscapes seem to be the toughest to pull off, but these do the job. Quite an inspiration. Thanks for sharing.

Great use of veg. These are very convincing images, if I didn't know better I'd say they were photos!

Thanks guys. I wish I could find some more (low-poly for distance) people having a leisurely stroll or cycle ride. They'd fit well in these kind of landscapes. Browsed to find some, but the yield is extremely meagre.
The masks to get the ditches, stream, road, etc. in were quite fickle to paint. Pixelwork, so to speak, as I didn't want to make the layered working TIFF too large. It's already at nearly one gig of data.

I love how your renders are so often seemingly simply, very ordinary every day scenes, yet when you keep looking you realize how many minute details are there that really make it come to life. It's your attention to detail that sets you apart, Dune, awesome work as always!

Exactly!
Nice work Ulco.
As we talked earlier here, he doesn't have always already majestic ready landscape features like mountains in his images as his work needs quite some flatland images for work mostly.

Have you checked this page out...a couple of bike riders amongst other folk. I had some luck with the bikers in the past. But check your email first

Fantastic work Ulco!
The variation in the greens of the grasses etc. is really rich and very well done.
You really nailed it I think, it looks very convincing and for me incredibly recognizable.

Yeah, I'm back. Miss me, huh? I had no internet for a week, no phone, no telly after moving. Phone company failed to deliver. Very quiet, but stressful too, as I have a job to finish very soon and need to communicate. All is well now, thanks.

I remember last time I had computer problems and was off line for the better part of a week. Even playing my guitar wouldn't soothe my jangled unconnected brain heh heh heh

Another medieval work in progress. And some (not so good yet) mountain tests with snow base and hard rock by mask extruding from that, like commented on elsewhere.

Let's see, do I like the clouds the best?...Well, they are just awesome.
Or, how about that sand?....
Or, the vegetation mix?....
Or, the blend from shore to terrain?...

Always fascinating! Such details!

Something else I've been working on, still WIP. I have a problem with the water/mud transition, even with almost highest subdivision level (0.85) it is quite distinct. Food for post I expect.
Title: Re: Some new WIP's
Post by: luvsmuzik on January 27, 2018, 02:32:45 PM
Still incredible how you can isolate these areas of details!
Title: Re: Some new WIP's
Post by: Tangled-Universe on January 27, 2018, 03:30:58 PM
Hmmm interesting...in the bottom left section I actually really like the somewhat sharp transition of mud to the water depth. Very realistic, I have seen it many times in real life.
However, to the top right of your watermark the transition results in some little bit obvious unnatural sharp edges and perhaps it is that area which bothers you?
Title: Re: Some new WIP's
Post by: Dune on January 28, 2018, 06:19:04 AM
Yes, I like the left underside too, but it's mainly on the right shore, and near the upper houses. I could probably have made 'fake depth' of the water and used the planet as a water body too, but that would need a different approach. Then it's easier to get the adhesion effect on transition between water and mud. But I'll do some blurring on the final big one.

What can I say.... they all look great. There's just one thing that confused me a little bit, that's the part on the lower right of 'Eept Vl18_UG_v2' At first glance, I thought it was a huge fallen tree, but maybe that's because I am not so bright in the morning. :-[
Title: Re: Some new WIP's

Maybe so, because I don't see what you see. I must say that this version is a bit hard in colors, the final is much softer, and the black storks have taken to the sky too. There a are a few areas of shrub and trees and then there's the muddy creek.
