Not sure what you mean by "Add a fractal terrain" -- I just changed the seed in the default heightfield generator to 999, hit F3 and Alt r --

40 seconds.

He meant the a power fractal I think.  Add Terrain --> Power Fractal.  It will cover the entire planet.

Ah, okay.  Rendering something else at the moment.  I'll try that when this finishes.

Upper is power -  50s.  Lower is alpine fractal -  2m33s.

Did you guys move the camera?  When I open TG, add power fractal terrain, hit F3 and alt-r, this is my result.

Will one of you attach a clip file of the camera you're using; mine seems to be different.

I got what Klas had.

16 threads : 1:10
16 threads, default heightfield deleted (makes a big difference on the Mac) : 0:42

Is that a mac only thing, or will deleting the default help always?  I just assumed an un-generated default wouldn't cause any issues.  I usually delete it anyways when working but probably good to know ;).

I'm not sure if it makes a difference on Windows. I'll try it soon, although it is an easy one to test yourself :-). I've only noticed what a difference it makes on the Mac recently. It will make a bigger difference the more threads you use, I think.

Just did a quick test regarding the default heightfield. When rendering  the 999 power fractal with 8 threads the results are about 2s apart (30s (w/ default heightfield) to 28s (without)). Using the Alpine fractal there is no reproducible difference.

An exasperating 4.15 on my laptop. My purchase of TG2 is gonna have to wait for a pc I'm afraid :(

4:07 for me on 2 cores, pretty poor, need a decent new system(and money to buy one).
Removing the heightfield shader didn't have much effect on Windows Vista. It was a few seconds quicker but I think that's just a negligible difference.

Can someone post their tgd for me to test?  I get different views than everyone else seems to have.

Here's mine. (p.s. - you need to reduce atmo samples to 16 - it was one of the first settings I tweaked for stage 2)

A quick doodle for part 2 of this 'challange'  ;D

I'm doing something similar. Like the texturing on the foreground. The middle distance looks a bit "shiny".
