Grand Canyon/Monument Valley help
April 08, 2011, 12:27:45 PM
Years ago I've tried to terraforming Grand Canyon and Monument Valley with terragen classic, with some good results.
Now I want to try with terragen 2, but I need some suggestions.
1) What software I can use to import dem files on tg2?
2) What dems are corrects for this? This site is good?
http://data.geocomm.com/dem/demdownload.html
3) Here're some tutorials to do this?
Thanks for help.

Too bad, but I can't help you here. Don't know anything about DEM's.

Terragen 2 can load DEMs natively in GeoTIFF format. Many DEM download sites offer this format. Alternatively you can use the free (though no longer updated) 3DEM downloadable from here:
http://www.visualizationsoftware.com/3dem
or the free Wilbur:
http://www.ridgecrest.ca.us/~jslayton/software.html
(supports SRTM and a few other formats I think) One of the best apps for working with DEMs is GlobalMapper, but it's not cheap:
http://www.globalmapper.com
($349US)
The best free DEM data you're going to have access to for the US is NED (National Elevation Data). Here's an example terrain list from Sonoma County, California:
http://data.geocomm.com/catalog/US/61069/1297/group194-3.html
For more options as well as global data in SRTM, I recommend
http://seamless.usgs.gov/
and the various links there. That site will usually let you specify to download in GeoTIFF.
A quick search of the forum for "DEM tutorial" yielded this on the first page of results:
http://www.archer-designs.com/tutorials/terragen2/working-with-gis-data/index.html
That should give you all the rest of the info you need.
