Terragen and Memory issue

Hi, I was wondering, is there any way to not take TG2 so much ram...in the screenshot below as you can see it is taking almost 500 MB of my ram and its on normal priority and I am not even rendering...due to this problem, I am getting that memory allocation error for almost all my renders and cant even render now....

I have 2 GB of ram and I am using windows vista ultimate......

please help me on this one....

Do you have Vista's 'Aero' interface (iirc) enabled? That effectively doubles every app's GDI consumption, (again, iirc). You might do better to disable it. Then again, you might to better to downgrade back to XP.    What possessed you to go to Vista Ultimate?

Currently there is no way to reduce TG2's memory use for a given scene. Memory efficiency will be improved in the future which may help on this kind of scene on your machine, but there will always be limits. Vista uses more memory than XP in a default configuration, especially with the Aero interface, so that's just something you're going to have to deal with. 3+GB is recommended for best performance under Vista, so you may consider an upgrade in the not-too-distant future. Fortunately memory is not terribly expensive.

I would have thought that having 50+ processess running may have contributed to lack/loss of memory somewhat.

That's just the way of things under Vista.

Ironically OS X was almost as memory hungry (in a relative sense) in its day. Of course at the time it brought with it such a tremendous amount of new features it was a lot harder to dismiss than Vista is now. Nonetheless many people resisted OS X adoption for years.

Anyway there's not much wrong with XP from a memory use standpoint, at least not on a modern system and given the advantages over 98, ME and (to a much lesser extent) 2000. No need to jump straight to Linux or OS X from Vista, just "downgrade".

Keep in mind that the taskmanager isn't real accurate as to what the memory usage is. Even if you release memory in a program, it's not directly visible in the taskmanager. The garbage collector needs to do it's work and even then it might appear to be in use until some other program comes along asking for memory.

In other words, don't rely on the taskmanager all that much when it comes to memory usage.

And what's so bad about having a few processes running? You think linux doesn't run processes in the background? run top if you got in installed on your linux otherwise try issuing a ps -eax and see how much processes are running. My linux server runs more processes than my XP.
