I experimented a bit with fractal settings, and this came out. Clumping of variation set at 5-10 gives these interesting distinctions between smooth and rugged.

(You'll see that at these clumping settings the noise variation setting will be quite sensitive to changes.
I suppose you used a multi-scale modulator noise-type as well as I believe this won't work for (un)clamped multi-fractals?)
