Experimenting with reflective sand granules. Although the size looked OK in the preview window while creating, the final render yielded something larger than I was looking for. This is after I had tried three progressively smaller sizes of fake stones. This same set up would look good for snow as well.

Models included are Walli's dry shrubs (2 pops; each color adjusted) and his Mouse Ear chickweed. Ade's Dead tree treated with an image map making it look like one struck with lightning and burned. And, the Screech Owl ...thanks Mark.

Enjoy.

nice work, the sand is a nice touch for sure...

I really like the top to the middle, all the way across-looks perfect.
But the foreground still needs developing.
Choronr, is the sand in front the same as in the back? If so your method looks like it works very well at a distance. Are you still developing this method?
Good stuff, nice shot!
It has been eaten.

Thanks TB, after some more work, I'll be sharing this file and you can check that out for yourself. Actually, the distant sand and foreground sand are different. Only the foreground sand contains the fake stones (very small w/reflectivity). I first plan on making these fake stones a lot smaller; also, will add a second fake stones shader made very, very small with much less density. Then, will increase the reflectivity on those; change their reflectivity tint, hoping to achieve a glitter effect.

Reworked the sand by reducing the fake stone shader size; added an additional, smaller fake stone shader of less density but with higher reflectivity.
