node structure/stack explanation?

Where can I find a good Terragen node structure explanation? I mean not some help for each specific node but rather how the input/output stack working. Sometimes I absolutely don't understand why things work not as I expected.  It looks to me that the node workflow is somehow different from what I was accustomed with 3ds max, Blender, Substances, Filter forge etc.  If more specific I need to learn a bit more how one node blends into next one?  Should I use special blending mode nodes every time  or special mask nodes?   
Whould be appreciated if someone point me to some basic principles help/reference.

I tried but have not found anything actually.
For example in 3ds max, you have a noise and two color inputs in which you can connect another noise with other scale  to get some blending, or you can use mix node and another node as mask.  Here I do not understand quite right what is the input of nodes for and how it works. It looks like layer system tipped up down but I still can't predict what can  I  get, what input is right and what not.
