I had to do some post-work in PS with the shadows and smudge them a bit to make it more realistic. Maybe I should have used the "Soft Shadows?`what does it do to the render?

Very nice. You should use the soft shadows, as it would soften the hard shadow line very much. It will take (much) longer to render though, so in this case PS post is maybe faster.

Small example showing soft and hard shadows. I've noticed that in some cases the soft shadow option rendered even faster. Not sure why...

Very nice image.  I shudder to imagine trying to render something 14,000 by 4872.  My biggest renders so far are 1920x1080.  Was it made for some sort of multi-monitor setup?

These are two 1920x1080 renders put in one image. Some guy I know has two screens, one above the other (don't know why...) and wanted a cool image of an exo-planet.
Currently rendering a 4800x3200 image for a poster (about 16 x 10 inches @300dpi). Set the detail to 0.7, otherwise it would take forever considering the complexity of the scene. I'll post it when its done.
By the way, anyone know of a good re-size/re-sample tool? I need to double the size of some images without making them look horrible.

it used to be called genuine fractals...it's not free though...
... it is possible to enlarge some images (especially for print) with photoshop, using stepped enlargement interpolation/anti-aliasing etc...

The technique Virtualdub uses looked very (even too much) similar as the old  "Genuine fractals"
(it seems they used the same method only labeled as fractal resizing. Only guessing of course! )
and i think maybe the new one "One on one" is the same probably.

There was one script-plugin for Gimp that uses the same method. Free . You have to search.

It could work but i would test it before .
Nothing is good as in native resolution for me , so you have to see if you like it or not.

Having your image on canvas is a great idea. Just finished a render on 4800x3200. Might look good on canvas.
