I used the EXR output and adjusted the exposure and gamma (+1.5 and 0.85 respectively).
That's it actually, nothing more.
I seldomly use source images or references in a direct manner.
When I surf the net and forums like these I run accross things I like or I get ideas.
For instance, I've been in France a dozen of times and remember areas with calceous soil where pines and some loaf trees grow easily, along with grass. But honestly I only came up with that now you mention it and made me think about it.
I just had the idea, thought it might look nice, that's all

I see your argument about the rocks. I contemplated about removing the strongest highlights, but first of all I couldn't get it done in a nice way and on second thought I thought it might be more closer to how a real camera would capture it. Like you said.
I agree it's not very desirable.
I can add some extra detail and darker texturing, is that what you mean?
