Camera and Object Import Scale Issue

Hello, how do I import my free camera and object into TG2 from 3ds Max? The problem is scaling. I have to scale my objects in order to get them the same size in TG2. The camera doesn't scale with them, so it appears to be much farther (because objects are scaled). My process is this: I import my camera from 3ds Max by fbx, then I have to export my object at .25 scale from Max, then in TG2 I scale my scene down further by .101
What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help

This I believe is nothing to do with TG2 but rather a problem with your scene settings in max, you need to check what the scenes measurements are. Are they in .mm or feet or the max default, which is some bizarre measurement scale unheard of in the known universe.

In max, my box is 5 meters wide, in TG2 it imports at 235ish meters wide (using ruler). The automatic settings bring the camera and object at the correct distance from each other, but the problem then is the scale of the box is 235, compared to 5 in max. I want to keep things at real world scale, but merge camera work in from max.

Shouln't 1 meter in max = 1 meter in Terragen?

Hi,

Could you possibly send me your FBX file? My email address is:

That depends on your units settings in Max.
You can have 1 unit = 1 mm or 1 unit = 1m.
A box of 5 unites could be 5mm or 5m, depending on your units settings.

So you need to match units. TG2's units are in metres, so you have to set them to metres as well in your target applications.
Upon importing FBX you can be asked which scale-factor to use.

Here is the files: max w/cam and 5M box, TG2 w/5M box (almost 300M), and fbx of cam
My max (2010) is setup in Meters like Terragen, I export max obj at 1 on scale, import 1 on scale in TG, and the size is major different.
How do you make box and animated camera from max to be the same size/distance in TG?
Thanks so much for helping.

Hi,

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I've had a look at your files and there is something up with the OBJ file. It's much bigger than 5m. It looks more like 196m on a side, or rather 196 units (depends what measurement the OBJ is supposed to be based in). It seems TG is importing it correctly. I don't have Max to try it with but I think something has gone wrong with scaling in the export.

I opened the file in Max,

The reported size using the measure tool is 7.044m * 7.044m * 3.489 M (x,y,z)

Your display units are set to Metric Meters but the system units are set as inches.

Customize | Units Setup... |System Unit Setup

Changing system units setup changes the dimensions to :

277.328 *277.328 * 137.345 (M x,y,z)

There is a way to rescale in Max (Rescale World Units) but I don't think it helps in this instance.

Make sure your Display unit scale matches your system units scale and rescale at sub-object level to the correct size. In this case you need to multiply x,y,and z dimensions by .0254 (1 inch = .0254 meters) after you have changed the System Units scale to meters. Or,  recreate the file but make sure system units and display units are the same.

Hope this helps.

Back to work on this now, thanks for the responses.
@Jo, I'll bet you can get Max from Autodesk as a developer, a close friend of mine is a programmer for them, I could ask if you want.
@Chris, thanks man, I've never seen that before, and I've been on max for 13 years. That makes sense and works perfect, now I get a 5m box from max to be a 5m box in TG.
