Why are the rocks in the shade not shaded?  Hmm... Hubble image overlaid in MoodFlows starfield background clip file. Thanks, Mark

This is cool. I like big dramatic scenes like this. The terrain looks really good.

TheBadger

Love the view from here.
It has been eaten.

Walli

very nice, I really like colors and contrast, fits the scenario very well

Dune

Spectacular, nice terrain and colors. Only thing that bothers me are the stones scattered around, too evenly in size and distribution, IMHO.

Bjur

Yeah, more Sci-Fi..  :)

Good colors and scene, i love the crispness of the surface!

Bright as it shines, you could set up a second, non visible sun, with lower power to the surface (Light/Glow atmosphere off), right at the place where the lightsource of the ring structure is for additional visual soft light/shadows maybe.

You could also try to set your main sun/lightsource to non visible and putting it right into the place of the ring structures lightsource just for fun (a very weak fill light for surfaces only opposite direction to the sun might be needed)..
~ The annoying popularity of Vue brought me here.. ~

Very good Mark, I agree about the stones. To me, the lighting looks ok.

Tangled-Universe

Cool stuff, very crisp and clean. Well done :)

Here is version 2...I agree with Dune and Choronr...the rocks distribution seems to predictable....needs more randomness. I added a second rock field with larger stones to break it up a bit. What now? My original question remains....why do the rocks in the shade glow and don't seem to be in the shadows. Why are they not shaded?
Thanks,
Mark

Do you have a high value for reflection or luminosity on your rock shader?

choronr

Looks better Mark; and, maybe an adjustment of GI? I see some top light of the land form that is shadowing the stones ...could this be why you see the shaded stones?

Dune

I still think the stones are not naturally spread. Why not blend them by a patchy PF? Or restrict them to depressions. The terrain and colors are perfect, though! Don't know about the light in the stones, must be in the texture of the stones I'd say.

It looks like they are picking up GI, possibly bouncing from the ground. If they are picking up too much bounce light in the shadows it could be that your GI relative detail is not high enough (i.e. it's blurring the light around too much, spreading into the shadows). But there may be some other reason. You could also check to see if they have much brighter colours than the surrounding terrain.

Just because milk is white doesn't mean that clouds are made of milk.
