Geocontrol ... any chance to wake up the guys behind this project ?

After browsing the website, it looks like GC is nearly dead ?

It's a really pitty because from the small tests I did I find the terrain quality very outstanding ... Erosion looks soo real, and just the basic 'noise' do a fantastic job.
The dream would be world machine nodal system with GC filter quality and iso subdivision system ... but I can live with the actual layered system too.

For now my biggest concern is the limited terrain size (looks like a 64bits is needed to go over the 4096 limit ... supposed to be released in 2012).
And of couse filters should be multithreaded, 4096 terrain erosion can take 1 hour to generate :S

Not sure if Planetside could do anything about this, GC is a really good Terragen's  friend, something has to be done to save him :)

What?! I just bought this! DEAD?!

I wrote an e-mail to the guy a few weeks ago asking a question, and he responded. So he is there at least.
World Machine dose not and is not likely ever going to build for Mac. So I went with GC. But you know I rather like the GC software.

The GC guy has been in these forums asking for some better relationships with this community. I don't know what the issues are though. I got the feeling there was some history there?

Well if we need one of these other programs, and WM will never support OSX, then planetside should support GC! Because Terragen has a large number of mac users... Well at least me for sure, but I know Im not the only one.

It has been eaten.

It is just Johannes (hope I spelt his name right). He had some type of accident some time back so I think that is the reason as to why he is not vocal as much as he used to be. Thankfully he still as far as I know, is still updating lately as there is some newer erosion types in GeoControl 2.5. GeoControl still has the best looking erosion I have ever seen, trust me. I used to take Geology very seriously and taken hundreds of photographs of the Southwest and Pacific Northwest for documentation's sake. To have it plugin with Terragen would be nice. Personally I am looking forward to what version 3 has up it's sleeve.

Hi Chris,

Believe me I trust you, I have no idea if it's geology correct or not, but visually and artistically it's indeed outstanding.
I would like to pick a license of GC just for myself, it's not that expensive, but I need to know if the development is still active.

I dont see any info on the 2.5, the last update on the forum is about 2.2b60, so do you have the right to talk a little bit more about it ?

Not entirely true. At some stage they plan to upgrade the GUI of World Machine and it will be more cross platform compliant. I know this because there have been several people wondering about Linux World Machine. OSX is definitely not out of the question. When this could ever happen, I don't know but it's not ruled out. At present World Machine works under Linux wine.

As for Geocontrol. I think the results from that app look really good. In fact I think the best. I'm just judging by examples and watching the videos. It looks like cool software but I never tried it. I've heard some negatives about actually using it though.

The geology is fairly accurate, at least as far as trying to simulate it goes. I still think development is going. There are just those periods of quiet at the moment. It was 2.2, sorry. 2.5 is supposed to be coming up at some point. I can not say anymore because i have been to busy attending to other matters so at this point I know only what I know.

I definitely like Geocontrol erosion the best. Maybe other aspects of the program are good as well but if you compare Geocontrol erosion to World Machine, then Geocontrol looks more natural and less stylised. This may be all down to the users though. They both get good results.

Despite that I love WM2 I agree that the erosion looks "stylized" or rather "angular" I'd tend to say.
Depends on which type you use of course, but heavy erosion has this 90 degree angular shape tendency all over it.
Milder erosion tends to look stylized too.

I'm not too bothered by it, as it's only an issue if you do aerial shots.
I have only one major issue with WM erosion and those are the supersarp straight channels, which are something kilometers long.

I like the fact that you can make roads on your terrain and also import and export same.  A very nice asset to Terragen.
