Another aspect would indeed me nicer. And I always have something against these 'hard' clouds, they always look a bit too solid. I would probably 'hide' them behind fluffier cloud layers, so you only see some parts and not the one chunk.

Try to push/evolve that main cloud and the scene around further..

Your picture have a great kind of "The End" feeling.

Another thing you might try is giving the image a little more contrast.  Terragen's default value I belive  is .25, which is too low in my opinion. I've been cranking it up to .5 and getting richer looking images  right out of the render without the further need to contrast it later.  This tends to make things look more photographic as the whites tend to pop more and the darks recede further back.

I tried with your idea. Here is the result. Left default value .25, Right value .5

Looks better indeed, but using that depends on where it is. Here (Netherlands) we tend to have more moist in the air than e.g. central Australia, so this 'harsh' contrast is rare.

I'm thinking the left might be more common to a hot summer day (or a moist day as Dune points out), the right a winter day.

It becomes an esthetic call but for me personally I prefer the one on the right, even if it's a less realistic rendition in certain parts of the world.
