Badger : No, the explosion is not a plane or billboard.
The explosion is just three local clouds and a light. One of the clouds uses a mask shape I made for the density, This is the one that
is giving the streaks going off to the upper left.
Choronr : The "Chicken Dinner" is really a small separate population of the BBQ model located up in the air inside the cloud because they are populating a small invisible surface planet object centered on the explosion.
Those BBQ models inside the explosion have a power fractal randomly effecting their opacity function, so this causes them to appear not whole, but as various fragments of the body portion of the BBQ model, which is probably why they aren't readily identifiable except for the grill portions, whose opacity I left alone.
This whole image was mainly a texturing exercise, trying to get variation in reflectivity paint, chipped paint, corrosion, etc.
and also using a small power fractal as a mesh displacer giving the models some subtle (I hope) random dimpling.
Due to the low angle and amount of light I think some of the texture details are lost, but I decided on the early morning light anyway.
