Fields of Lavender and Sunflower

I wanted to do something a little more summery. Guess I'm already missing the longer warmer days I'm not even sure if this is worth perusing ...
Not too sure where this is going yet. The fields are a large scale voronoi which I will probably replace with a simpler image map to define the hedges and field boundaries etc. Also the "village" is for now a stand in, certainly needs replacing. For idle curosity I tried running it through some of photoshops paint effects and the result was predictably dull, looked pretty much like someone had run a pic through ps paint effects rather than an actual painting lol.

Very good. The sunflowers are usually pretty tall compared to the lavender. I'm thinking that if they were, maybe the lines between the lavender and sunflowers would be softer?

I think you better leave out the ruts, as it draws too much attention to the fact that the path isn't level. Or place a strategic tree just in front of the most angled path area(s). And maybe soften the ruts, or add more, slightly warped across each other.
The sunflowers need more variety, and the church needs texture. The verges need grass. But then it can be a really nice render! I like the sandy verges, looks very Provence like. And the way the town is situated is nice. Worth pursuing, I'd say.

I wanted this to be a comparability simple task compared to the last image (veil) but it's getting out of hand. SSS stacking upon top of each other creating masks and displacements and masking the masks, it's all getting very confusing.
There will definitely be more variety in the lavender and sun flowers. I'm more concerned with getting the positioning right.

I wish there was a way of re-using a fractal warp shader without having to repeatedly copy and paste it and then have to re edit every copy if I make any changes to the original... Arghhh!


Pure geometry = easy
Pure random fractals = easy
Believable mix between the two= nightmare!!!

Can't you add the fractal warp as child to a surface layer? So you just need a set of surface layers then.

If you use 'normal' warp, you can use the same warping set, but just need to feed all you want warped through a series of warp shaders. The latter is my work flow anyway.

like this last one a lot. Only problem I have, rightly or wrongly, is the sunflowers in front feel to small, and the ones in back feel to big. Also, I would expect to see a bit more, very subtle color variation and size variation especially in the lavendor. Also some more weeds in the crop. Its just to clean and perfect... Though, that may be how it really is.

Its hard to say whats more important, representing reality, or playing to expectations. For example, the posts where people share photos of strange landscapes, and then joke about what people would say if it had been a render rather than a photo. I am not sure I know anymore.

I like this version, Richard! An immense approvement. I like the way it has an abstract feel to it as well as a natural. 'Vlakverdeling' is nice. Path is great, nicely overgrown.

Some small crits (but I'm terrible): agree with Michael about the sizes and color/size variation of both lavender and sunflowers, but I also think the poplars may be twice or 3x their size. Another thing, but that's nitpicking, is that in the farther field of lavender (left) you have a ground structure, but the lavender is kind of floating across it, like it's almost a series of bars, if you get my meaning. If you can translate that ground color a bit to the lavender, you'll loose that. Wouldn't be hard.

Thanks guys Yes I was going for an abstract(ish) look. I had not heard of "Vlakverdeling"before. Translating from Dutch it seems to mean "Area Division or image building" and I can not find out much about it. (The Google translate wiki lacks good grammar so I'm only a little wiser! )

I posted this on my FB wall and there's a guy there who is busy critiquing it as if it were a photo. He won't be told and is convinced I should have used a different lens or film stock!
