As much as I respect the design of Terragen 2 and 3, I absolutely despise it. I struggle with it more than any software I have ever used, the UI is counter intuitive and all the online Youtube tutorials are useless. I often end up with odd artifacts in the renders too, for this reason I'd rather stick with classic TG as a hobby. I enjoyed using classic Terragen just for creating simple sunrises, sunsets and islands. Something that I can't manage in Terragen 2 or 3. Of course the classic version of Terragen has the black nonexistent Terrain and the render size limit when unregistered, but considering the registration area on the site no longer works, and has long been superseded by 2 and 3, I was wondering if it was now available fully activated free? I'd much like to be able to render out at high resolution and print!

Despite your difficult start, welcome to this forum. The learning curve is indeed steep, but once you get the feeling for it, it's the most incredible peace of landscape software there is! With so many possibilities. So, my advice would be to try to get to grips with it a little longer, and if you have a technical question, just post it. The most of us are quite friendly  :D

There are also some tutorials on a website by a distinguished forum member; http://www.cgscenery.com/

Yes, I think Planetside should make Terragen 0.9 free, seeing as it is no longer sold or supported, just offer it with no guarantees.  Still, I agree with Ulco.  It is quite easy to use Terragen 2 or 3 if you limit yourself to using the topside buttons until you get  the hang of manipulating the shader nodes.  You may not have quite the control over the landscape and finer points of the program but you can still get some good stuff.

We have discontinued Terragen Classic as it is extremely old and no longer updated. We realize that some people do still like using it and would appreciate being able to do so without restrictions and we're considering how we might allow that, without actually dealing with registrations, support, updates, etc. that would be expected of a purchased product. Unfortunately, until we determine the best way to proceed, licensed features will be unavailable.

We will likely make an announcement regarding Terragen Classic through social media (Facebook, Twitter, Google+) and our mailing lists when a decision is made. You can subscribe to your notification service of preference on our website: http://planetside.co.uk/
