This is the first render I got back from my friend. It had a lot of errors, particularly with the suns and the planets which had to be fixed in photoshop. This started out as a "Grinch" like scene, and when I used the "Twist and shear" shader, I got this look (nothing like I thought it was going to do) which looks very much like lava formations.

QuoteNeminem Petra or Cooled Rock is a ancient moon with a topography much like Mercury or Venus. It used to dramatically change, the surface becoming molten rock, and then cooling. A repeating process for billions of years until it finally ceased. After the process stopped, the moon was too small to maintain it's atmosphere created by gasses from the repeating cooling and heating process. Now only a thin layer of atmosphere remains, fueled by cooling gasses released from it's core.

How did you do the background? I think the stars and nebula are not rendered?

No that is made in Photoshop. I used to make space scenes from scratch in Photoshop only before discovering Terragen. Example:

Planet using varied Mars maps:

Terrain from Scratch with cloudmap via NASA JPL (Shadows are made orange on purpose for sun angle in final piece, which I can't find):

More terrain:
