I deal with stl files almost everyday and a lot of programs can do that. What do you want specifically? Result that is in quads or?

I happened to stumble upon this site:
https://grabcad.com/library/wheel-loader/files
where they have some interesting objects. And I wondered if the stl files where good enough for basic shapes to work from, so first converting to something that can be opened in LW for instance.

I think LW has an stl importer? Not sure since I dont use it much, but the format itself is very old and most programs do support it. Basically stl file contains triangles so it should be workable if it imports. Detail depends on how it has been exported but typically since its for 3D-printing there should be plenty of triangles. I often import to 3D-coat and auto retopo the objects to get a better starting point for 3D-renders.

It's a good bit of software. However, there is no undo button, so sometimes you have to just start over when you get messed up.
Cheers,
Russ

It works with stl. But I found some extensions that are unfamiliar to me, and also to Poseray and Meshlab: sldasm, sldprt and 3dm. Solidworks and Max, I think. It's not hugely important though.

Okino Polytrans has been my workhorse file converter for many years. It's not inexpensive, but has the most options and cleanest results in my experience. While I haven't messed with Stereo Lithography Files (yet), per the Okino folks "Note: STL is the world's #1 worst 3D file format. It is nothing other than one big clump of triangles."
http://www.okino.com/conv/imp_stl.htm
Still, I suspect given Okino's proven CAD industry experience that these modules (including LWO) would be the most precise conversions.

Thanks, Doug. Well, sometimes even just a bunch of triangles could be handy to have as a basis to work from.
