just a very crudely handmade bumpmap and the color-enhanced map NASA provides.
Thanks, NASA!

Better version below (hopefully)

Looks good so far. Although the bump map seems to be a bit too crude especially to the lower right. Can't you just create a bumpmap out of the NASA texture? Grayscale plus some additional stuff?

Hannes

Hmm, looking at the craters it seems you did exactly this, didn't you? Nevertheless these bumps to the lower right look a bit weird.

Good start here. The left side looks pretty cool though.

Thanks for your constructive critique Hannes, yes, that´s what I did.
And thanks Doc an Archon!
Here is my next iteration, smaller version for your viewing convenience (modified after Oshyans suggestion)

The latest version is definitely better, but both are rather nice. I would only suggest having the full-size image viewable in a pop-up instead of "in-line" as there are no scroll bars when it goes full-size and it makes it hard to see the whole image on "smaller" screens (1600x1200 here).

Looks nice.
A different star background maybe?

kaedorg

Pretty nice. You could try an animation from this image.
Not fan of the background stars too.

Thanks to all,
but there won´t be an animation of his image soon, if I had the capacity to make one there would be other candidates first.
Sory to hear the stars don´t please, they are my very own procedural ones from back in the beginning.
Any ideas where to get better stars?
Oshyan, I´d like to show the image als a popup, but I don´t know how.

Cheers,
Jan

Second image is really cool! ;)

Ah, I didn't realize you were linking to an off-site image. To make it a pop-up you'd need to attach it here using the attachment function.

Hi there, here is an angle that NASA didn´t show you:

Very nice. I think the atmosphere at the terminator would be more realistic if you enable shadows from surfaces (or at least bring the atmosphere's floor setting closer to 0).

Just because milk is white doesn't mean that clouds are made of milk.
