hi, quick question:

is this setting (Clouds - Optimisation - Use 2D Shadow map) turned on
only working on the shadows the cloud casts on the terrain or
does it also influence the shadows within the cloud itself?

I really can`t tell the difference from the renders I have here...

cheers, Klaus

Hey Klaus,

Out of frustration with cloud-on-cloud shadow system I made a few tests. I also tried 2D shadow map hoping this may solve my problem, but I guess you could use it.

I would say that 2D shadow map has influence on both terrain and clouds though, indeed, it may not be very profound. Probably the blur setting has influence on it. Anyway, have a look at these pictures and the areas marked.

It affects shadows cast onto everything except the cloud itself. It affects cloud-on-cloud shadows but only between different cloud layers.

I already began to wonder if that question was a too trivial one to ask since no one responded, so...

Thank you N-drju.
Your picture showed quite well why I was not sure if 2D shadows affect the self shadowing of the cloud.

Thank you Matt for clarification.
Saves time in a tg world without almost nothing but a cloud not to create a 2D shadow map.
