Thanks for all the info, but the extended crash log isn't likely to help much. The .tgd would be the only thing that might, and even then it may just be a case of your displacements being too extreme. If you can share the .tgd I might be able to shed more light.

Cyber-Angel

Oshyan,

The .tgd file is at the bottom of the post but I've included it again.

Regards to you.

It appears to be caused by your unusual configuration of Function Nodes in the Shader group. What were you trying to achieve with the Get Altitude in Texture and Add Vector nodes?

- Oshyan

Cyber-Angel

I was trying to get some variation in the strata in the image, plus I have a great deal to learn about the nodes and what works with what, I was trying to get the kind of strata you see in parts of the mid-west with over hangs on the rock face and so on. One other thing, since I started using computers many moons ago I have always liked pushing software to its limits and using it in unusual, unconventional ways and try and find weaknesses in the software then help (By proving information) try and fix them so other people don't find the same problem.

TG2 is by its nature a complex program and as such there maybe weaknesses that conventional methods and use patterns may not revel; the unconventional and  unorthodox (Known in the United States as "Thinking Outside the Box") may revel these anomalous behaviors before they bite you down the road.

My wish is that TG2 had away in the node network to visualize the flow from one node to the next using color coding of the connection lines (Akin to those colored squares in world machine on the nodes before the node name) like electricity flowing through a circuit: this way with the faster render times that are coming, you could experiment with different combinations of nodes and learn cognitively which combinations make which effect, this information could be checked by others and thus a  more effective knowledge base of methods could be developed in less time; with time equating to money (As it where) in production.

Regards to you.

Cyber-Angel

Oshyan

There's no reasonable way for TG2 to ever "check" your login in assembling a network and while using it in "unusual, unconventional" ways can be interesting, you have to be ready to run into unexpected behavior too. This is not necessarily a "fault" in the program; it is as easily a fault in the designs or connections you have setup. Trying to protect against crashes when something is done "wrong" is a good goal, but there will always be things that you can't account for.

rcallicotte

You're kidding?  If that's true, I want my money back.  In Euros, please.   ;D

So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

nikita

The node network has to be robust or it will be useless for it's main purpose will be to try unconventional stuff.
Of course, I don't know - but I think there are several ways of actually achieving this. One would be to recognise stuff that will not work and let the program not process the network, instead printing an error message.
I'm sure Matt knows enough graph theory to solve this :)
The other would be to add implicit conversion to and from all kinds of data types so TG2 will always know what to do and doesn't crash, even when incompatible freaky things are being tried.

rcallicotte

@nikita - I assume you're a programmer.  Even without having multiple possible connections through assorted nodes, I've found that more options for an end-user will always mean someone finds a way to mess it all up.  Assuming (again) that you try something unconventional and it all blows up, what else would we need?

So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

nikita

That's right. Such networks quickly lead to millions of possible combinations and you'll never be able to test them all.
I just wanted to express that there are measures that can be taken and we aren't totally helpless :)

rcallicotte

@nikita - What I do is wait until I have the finished product.  Then, I go back and set all of my traps.  Maybe this is what Planetside is doing.
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

Oshyan

Of course we can test for simple things like loops, divide by 0 (already handled gracefully I believe), etc. Automatic data type conversion already happens in many cases as well. But there are still so many things that simply won't work, or could cause "out of range" data. It may be possible to provide hard limits on input in many cases, but this could also limit flexibility. In general we favor providing good basic checks and limits, but allowing as much flexibility as possible as well, though sometimes this does mean unexpected or undesired things may happen.
