Attempt on surf, update #2

Hi there,

I have tried to simulate some surf, you know, when you're at a beach and the water is moving back after a wave broke at the shore. It's difficult to make it look entirely realistic, I think. Anyway here's an attempt.

(on a side note, it took 2.5 hours to render on 0.8 quality and 2/2 GI. I'm too impatient for anything longer than that)

I would welcome if you give it try on on your own and then let's discuss the methods. I've attached mine.

Cool.  Thanks, Frank.  I've played with this a little.  I'll download this, but have already reinstalled the last [previous and stable] version.   :P  When the next version comes out, I'll try it and hopefully remember to get back with you.  I'm sure I'll learn something from this, no matter.
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

Woah, now that's not bad! Are you going to continue working on this Frank?

Yes I think I will. Not his weekend though, no time to do so.
I figured that the white surf in the foreground is too strong. I like it best where it begins to fade in the mid ground, but that should be easy to adjust.
More difficult is getting the right shapes in the fractal, so that it looks natural, and that's down to pure luck. Also I'm craving for a built-in function that would detect shore lines (water meeting a surface, ground, stone or object). We'll see how far I and others get with this. I hope someone else will try to work it out as well, doesn't seem it's a popular topic so far.

Cheers,
Frank

Very nice Frank! I hope you'll post an update soon and show us a little of your approach as I have no idea how to something like this (yet:))...

Oh crap, how stupid :) it's on the right and I didn't look there because I didn't expect something like that to be over there :) Thanks!

Here's an update. How about that?

(small 0.6 detail render, though)

Yeah, definitely, it's looking a lot more promising :).

Ah that looks very nice! Great improvement. Hope you'll post another update or high-res/quality version...keep it up!

ZStar

Yes, it definitely looks better.  I hope you keep at it.  It will probably be very difficult to make it totally convincing at this close range but it would be great at medium range and longer.  The "water" does not flow over or around the rocks.  I don't know if that could be done in an automated fashion with TG.

Geez, Frank, that last one looks like a photo to me.  I don't have the supercritical eye that some do, but I wouldn't know this from a photo if I saw it anywhere else but Planestside forums (or Ashundar or Renderosity or...you know).

thanks guys - yes I too believe I'm on a good track :-)

here's another render (different seed, and a few adjustments). Personally, I am satisfied now. :-)

Very nice and realistic, clearly proper beach and surf renders are possible.
