Wondering how they "animate"... Anyone has a video of this type of clouds?

I think there was a brief thread here regarding them a year, maybe two years ago. Easy enough to search, just use Mammatus as your term.

Personally, I find the second one in the first post of this thread to be a little freakier because of the lighting. They're one of those cloud formations you'd just never believe was real unless you saw it in person!

YouTube has some time-lapse videos of them, but they're not as interesting as you might think. They just kind of float by, like any other kind of cloud.

Edit: my mistake; didn't realize these were "Asperatus" clouds. Never heard of those before. Should have read the fine print at the bottom of the picture first!

I don't think mammatus clouds are the same...

They're not - it was just the first thing that jumped to mind when I saw those images. Then I went back later and noticed that the website had them labeled at the bottom as "Asperatus". The images were impressive enough that I never even noticed there was type at the bottom and had never heard of Asperatus clouds before.

It wasn't until I started playing with Terragen a few years ago that I was even aware of so many varieties of clouds. I always thought they were limited to just the obvious ones - Stratus, Cumulus, etc.

But its like anything else on the internet: no matter how obscure your interest is, you're sure to find someone with a website devoted to it. (For me its pylons. Not the orange traffic cone-variety, I mean the high tension power-line type. And yes, I've found websites about them!)

I thought I was doing some weird images using T2. Nature has beat me again! These clouds are really cool!

Maybe Matt should re-enable the fake internal scattering to the cloud's GI again. Or have a checkbox to enable/disable scattering in GI areas. They look like the pre-release TG2 clouds, that oily look. Cool.

seriously warped!

I saw some clouds like in Inkydigits' link in Illinois when I was a kid. There were some very bad tornadoes in the area that day.
