I think he's imitating the black at the top and bottom of a wide letterbox screen movie. Works for me.

Very nice...

I can't help but make the suggestion: some camera projected lights plugged into to the luminosity channels
of your buildings would just give it that push over the cliff of total awesomeness...

I like the background mountain, the one with a flat top and yes the lights surely will add more realism. Great image!
