Clouds clipping
September 18, 2009, 03:09:55 PM
I'm rendering a wide curvature of the earth with an extremely high altitude of clouds.
I'm getting a render problem where there is clipping or a ray depth issue with the clouds.
The camera is above the cloud layer looking at the edge of the planet.
The distant clouds that arc behind the planet's horizon are not rendering until I'm under the cloud layer.
I've attached a small movie that shows the issue.
I'm guessing that this is due to some sort of optimization but I'm not sure.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Best Regards,
-Dave

Hmm interesting
The only thing I can think of that might help is in the Render>Advanced tab "Ray detail region", select "Detail in camera" and move the slider to the right. This would work if the issue was a terrain area clipping like this, not sure if it would work on clouds....
Good luck

Just tried and no luck. Thanks Richard for the suggestion.
I hope there is a solution, we're on the brink of selecting a software package (TG2 or Vue7.5)
I'm liking TG2 but this is a show stopper.

I know Matt is working on this now, so this is probably irrelevant or has already been tried. But the thought occurred to me that it might be related to the cloud Acceleration Cache. Go to the Quality tab of your cloud layer(s) and change Acceleration Cache to Off/None. See if that does anything.
