Shader tutorials?

Is there one place where all the shaders are explained?  I tried following links from this site, in particular a lot of praise went to someone who did a tutorial on the redirect shader; however, the link doesn't lead to that site anymore - so no tutorial.

It would be nice for a total newbie like me to have at least an inkling of what these things do.  I've written documentation in the past so if anyone has notes I can put them together and produce a tutorial.

As for experimenting, it is frustrating, I can link a whole bunch of different shaders together and get very lacluster results:  very disappointing and time wasting.  Still can't get the shader tab on heightfield generator to work...

Thanks in advance for any input,
JR

Thanks.  I have some reading to do.

The Node Reference is where this kind of information should be. We're in the process of adding more information for each node but it's rather incomplete at the moment.

You should also be aware of the other help resources here:

The node reference is good, but I guess where I fall short is how linking different shaders/nodes together to get desired results.  For example, I still have not found an answer to what does the "Use Shader" field on the Heightfield generator do.  Any shader I put there kills the heightfield.  Another forum member directed me to move the shader to after the heightfields before the compute terrain - which does work, but then it effects all the terrains if you happen to have more than one.  So still in the dark what that field is even for....

Same with some other shaders, the node network allows you to hook shaders together but you don't seem to get any results most of the time.  For example, I tried to use the multi-shader, to allow input from an image map shader and a crater shader and ended up with nothing on my terrain...

Thanks,

I really think if better reference information were available in the Node Reference that it should be obvious that, for example, the Multi-shader would not work in the way you are assuming. That information is unfortunately not yet available, but we're working on that.

I'll respond to your other thread about the heightfield shader in a moment.

I can understand that.  No problem I'm patient and still reading all I can get my hands on to try and make sense of what I'm doing. LOL!
Thanks for your help.
