do you reckon terragen could do this?

this was done by dax in vue8i
im talking about the displacements by the way.

Hi,

Yes, in fact I would say there have been many similar images done already.

It's all just a matter of finding the right displacement function/settings. A node whiz could probably do it fairly easily.

yes that is very similar I forgot about that beauty Ryan did, and to be honest it looks so much more realistic than the vue image ;D

I don't know, there is a very different look to these two examples for rock displacement. The first one done with vue has more of these rectangular shape, deep cracks, whereas the rock in Ryans (beautiful) image has a stronger impression of volcanic, organic, flowing rock.
I agree though that I think the same or similar displacement could be achieved with TG2, but not by simply applying a power fractal, or otherwise out of the box (in the sense of a single shader from the menu). There where other renders that came close to the displacement like in the vue render, but I have yet to see one that has the same type of displacement.

It could be an interesting challenge for us in this community,  to work out how this can be done in TG2. I would put my bet on a combination of power fractal, voronoi, and possibly image (displacement) maps.

I totally agre with Frank, they don't look like the same kind of rocks.
And I think it could be possible to do the Vue one in TG2 with a lot of work (as you would have to work a lot to do something similar to Ryan's structure with Vue)

RArcher

I think a fairly simple voronoi / powerfractal mix would do the trick.  I had something less refined but conceptually correct (in terms of displacement shapes) last year.  Yet another ugly unfinished project hah.  http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=4819.0

My Problem with voroni is that it always looks like voroni - I'm looking for a more right angled noise.

it should be possible using the technique I used to make this:

I used large scale powerfractals and voronoises, along with strata which was warped with more pfs...

probably look better in TG too!

Dune

Perhaps if you do two strata layers, and angle one strata layer by 90 degrees and play with it.... or use the voronoi only on a painted shader specified area...
