I've seen some clouds like that in photos before... could you link us to your source?  Those do look really cool, by the way .

Yes, those are real. They're called mammatus clouds and they're some of the coolest specific cloud formations that happen in nature. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammatus_cloud

As for when TG2 can do that, good question. Theoretically it could right now with the right noise function source, but I think it's safe to say that the right noise function is not in TG2 yet. If nothing else perhaps it can be added as a plugin function by an outside developer. The shading engine should certainly be able to deal with that as long as you can generate the shapes.

I've seen some TG renders that were starting to look like these although they were usually attempts at cumulus clouds. With a bit of clever masking you could probably come close.

Do you know if any new fractal types will be included in the next update? 

We definitely need a larger selection, such as voronoi and other terrain or cloud style fractals.  I know there is a voronoi function, but its a real pain to work with.  It would be nice to have this as a noise function which would definitely help with creating amazing clouds.

No new noise functions will be available in the next update but we do plan to include more for the final release at least.

I've seen formations similar to those on the bottom of thunder clouds that were threatening to spawn tornadoes. You (sometimes, I guess) get a similar bulgy, bag-like effect before funnels start to form. The general weather picture was a lot nastier than in those pictures, though (picture a sick green sky), so I don't know if it would be considered to be the same atmospheric effect.

In most cases, mammatus are associated with t-storms and tornadoes.  I grew up near tornado alley, and saw a few in person, including the green sky and mammatus clouds.  Very spooky to see!   

Now that I live on the West Coast, we hardly ever get any type of weather, other than fog or blue skies, so I kind of miss it.

Thanks for the information! And yeah, isn't that green sky thing the worst? I swear, you know you're in for a real ride when you see that.

The last 2 decades have seen me living first in the South Bay (Silicon Valley), then the Sierra foothills, and now in Wyoming. I hated the lack of weather in California - definitely a double-edged sword. I could go out and ride my bike nearly any time I wanted, but if you grew up somewhere with a little more variety it gets to be really boring.
