Is There a Good Tutorial on Working With Water (Rivers) Anywhere?

Trying to figure out the best way to implement rivers and I'm not having much luck. I've seen bits and pieces of things here and there but I haven't found much luck finding a good guide. Is there anything out there? If not, any particular tips or techniques that I should concentrate on?

Thanks in advance!

The easiest way in my opinion is to use a warped SSS (or sinus function) as a mask. Then, negative-displace the area to carve the river, then, fill it with water.

Then, the erosion plugin for Terragen by Danill has river function, there are also several setup examples available for that. Planetside forum topic and download links:

You can haul in terrain maps from other programs, ie, World Machine or Gaeae and set a lake with water level to simulate rivers. Painted shader does the trick for some depending on how precise you want your scene....

Gone are the old sculpting tools to carve a river or canyon, but it can still be done....

Thanks, I'm on a Mac so I think that erosion tool (if it's the one that I'm thinking of) doesn't work for me. Gaea is also Windows only so I'm out of luck too. I'll take a look at those other links.

I was hoping for something procedural but, maybe without investing in a Windows system to get access to other tools, it's not possible. I'll keep a' noodling along!
