I'm also visiting CGTalk very often. There are a lot of talented people there that makes incredible stuff.
Usually, they have to build everything from the ground and up, but in this competition most of the people
are going to use those models that are provided. The real challenge here is the lighting. So I think that if
you could get a great result with Terragen, it is worth the same as with any other software. Maybe even more.
I do understand your thinking, but I don't think it matter that much in this case. I hope you can see that.
The renderers these days are really easy to use. They only have more options then Terragen's render.
I'll say give it a try and see what happens. Terragen is very good for outdoor scenes
