The current lighting challenge at http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=185&t=632459 is Film Noir.  I'm going to use TG2 for it and I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone else is going to.  If so I could convert and post my tgd scene file.

Seth

Cgsociety is full of high level artists :)
great 3D can be found there... i am not good enough to pretend to participate to any kind of their challenge ^^
good luck ;)

No time...and maybe no talent (if Seth can't...sheesh   ;D ), but I wish you luck.
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

with what, 200,000 members it's bound to be quite full.  but full of everything, from 12 yr old kids to pixar artists.  look at the challenge for what it is: a chance to learn something from a true lighting pro who seems quite willing and happy to share his knowledge.  sort of like a free master class.

with the minimal texturing of a b/w shot, this seems tailor made for a tg effort.

and thx! to gregsandor for the original model.  well done sir ;D

...take a look at the "3D still" gallery and tell me where you find 12 yo kid creation...
anyway, i just said that i didn't have the talent to participate, i didn't said i haven't the brain to look at it and read the explainations of the artists down there ;)
and it seems that those artists are not very willing to learn to people ;) i don't think that's the purpose of their posts there :)
I take a look at this site almost everyday... good lord, most of the creations are just high above any TG2 user (no offense guys) They are 3D creators with 3D application like Maya or 3DSMAX... not people playing with some values like we do... ^^

rcallicotte

Not to take away from what we could do with TG2, but I agree with Seth's assessment.  Most of the images on the CG Society site are from talented skilled artists using high-end 3D software.  Hope you have fun, though.

i'm not necessarily talented  :), but i'm in.  thankfully your model had been converted to a .lwo, so, so far smooth sailing!

rcallicotte

Let us know how it goes and let us see your work, once you're allowed to display it elsewhere.

See you there!  Keep in touch once you start it in TG; I've set up some lights and stuff for it that might help.

Calico and seth93:  Just go download the model, take it into TG and set up a scene, and post it.  The other artists will critique it and give you ideas on how to improve it and you do the same for them.  That's how we all improve our artwork.

Hmm that petrol station looks kinda familiar, wernt we trying to get the shaders right on this a couple of weeks ago? I'll have a play and if I come up with any ideas I may jump in. Do you think it would be ok to convert the terrain to a terragen terrain (more detail) ?

Yes and yes.  If you can, do it.  As a matter of fact I have made the real location into a 10m res terragen terrain.  If you want it and are going to participate in the challenge let me know.

It sounds like we have a few here who are going to join in -- let's make a TG2 conversion and I'll ask Jeremy to post it on the ftp for everyone to use.

It sounds like fun and all, but I can't join cause of the memory issue. Terragen crashes after just a few minutes on my computer :(

I'm also visiting CGTalk very often. There are a lot of talented people there that makes incredible stuff.

Usually, they have to build everything from the ground and up, but in this competition most of the people
are going to use those models that are provided. The real challenge here is the lighting. So I think that if
you could get a great result with Terragen, it is worth the same as with any other software. Maybe even more.

I do understand your thinking, but I don't think it matter that much in this case. I hope you can see that.
The renderers these days are really easy to use. They only have more options then Terragen's render.

I'll say give it a try and see what happens. Terragen is very good for outdoor scenes ;)

I may give it a go just for a laugh  ;D

gregsandor, you said you had the terrain in a TG format? I wouldn't mind that if you'd be willing. Is it in scale with the other items? I am in the process of TGOing them at the moment. I have TGOd the terrain from an OBJ file, but I have a feeling that that is going to limit what I can do with it. If there are a few people going to do this then I'd be willing to post the TGOs of the individual objects on my site for all and sundry to download, just a thought
