I remember an amazing image from back in the day of an island that was tropical looking, yet had snow on the top (if i can remember rightly), but i cant remember who made it and i'd really like to see it again. Anyone know the one I'm talking about?

Anyway, Ive been working on this for a few days and its coming along alright. It reminds me a bit of Lord of the Flies. I'm going for a photorealism, but I'm stuck and really don't know where to go from here. I haven't done anything with the atmosphere yet, as i originally intended to be looking down from the top. What do you think of the scale of the trees and grass? Theres something not quite right to me. I can never seem to get the photo realistic feel that some of you get.

I think this setup might look better if the island was larger/flatter? Its a DEM of Mt Hood by the way.

Thanks for looking, and comments and critique needed!

Decided to ditch Mt Hood and go with something i could make beaches with

old_blaggard

I would really scale down the trees. Additionally, you should try getting more color variation both in the textures and in the water.

Why did you drop Mt Hood? I think it looked wonderful as an island, but you should scale down those trees as old_blaggard said.
In you'r new picture it's really hard to see cause of the clouds.

Any chance you could share the DEM's of Mt Hood?

It sounds like one of mine. It's not exactly amazing, but it's a little tropical looking and has snow at the top :)
I never did finish it, but here it is.

I agree with everything said here.  This reminds me of a level in BF2, but only a small piece of it.  Got any natives running around on that thing?   :o
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

Thanks for the replies. Sorry Sjefen, thats not the image i was thinking of ;) but it still looks great Ive never seen it before. The one im thinking of is pre TG2 and had no clouds in the sky. Oh and my new image is just a rough draft, far from completion.

I uploaded the DEM i have here: http://aa.1asphost.com/gullymuster/mounthood.ter
It is quite low resolution though and doesn't include much of the surrounding landscape. Its been sitting on my hard drive for yonks

Updated, thoughts?

darthvader

I really like the clouds, the beach, and the water...but the vibrant green color of the ground causes the trees to fail to stand out as much which gives the island a flat look

RogueNZ

The bright green is actually trees! But i definately agree they do need work

PG

Yeah perhaps if they were a little more sparse. :)
Figured out how to do clicky signatures

RogueNZ

Updated, only postwork was sharpening.

I think this one looks a little more natural. I think the trees are sorted, so next ill work on the reef and clouds :D

Looking a lot better now. Perhaps try adding some non tree areas with bare rock visible to make it have more variance. BTW what trees are those?

cyphyr

Looking really nice, try adding some palms along the beach, I think they would show up nicely at this altitude.

Yeah, much better. I would also prefer it with a bit less of a blue tint. Perhaps you can also play with adding some foam here or there on distant waves.
