It doesn't really change anything, lol, Sketchup has been around for longer than TG2. ;)
The best part is that the warehouse is entirely free and there are some incredible models in there. A lot of terrible ones, too, but that goes for everywhere else aswell, really.

I opened the sketchup scene, I could've saved the entire scene as an .obj but I think you'd rather just the house, most times Sketchup's plants and things are poor billboard objects.

The only editing was removing elements that I didn't want(simple click on item/face/surface and hit delete key). That was:- a terrain, an arbor, a path, fences, plants and trees.

I centred it as best I could to the default axis in Sketchup by simply selecting the entire object and moving it manually, I can't find a proper coordinate system to use in this program. ???

Finally, choose File>>Export>>3D model>>.3ds. It makes all the textures in the same directory as the model for a .3ds export. Import into poseray, visit export tab, select a location(a new folder) and save all to that(new image map copies too, I delete the originals after) to avoid having to reassign any textures in TG.

Well, it was like this before the Building Maker.  But, now maybe there'll be buildings for all of the major cities.

Thanks for explaining your process.  I'm planning to try it...someday.   :D
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

I spotted whilst browsing, the Chrysler building, the Eiffel Tower, The old WTC towers, Empire State building, Taj Mahal, Golden Gate/Brooklyn Bridges. There's lots already, get stuck in! :)

When in SketchUp, before exporting check that there are no coincident double faces (i.e. two polygons with the same vertices but opposite normals); if in case, delete the "inner" one to prevent renderes to become "confused" about which polygon render.

Bye!!!

P.S.: a suggestion for TG developers: put on your checklist the handling of import of COLLADA meshes (just the polygons and texture, no need of messing with bones and so on).

Very promising and useful work this opens up a huge stack of possibilities :) I had a go with a free version of sketchup a while back and didn't get on with it (didn't try too hard ;)), here's a good reason do dive back in. Are you using the free or paid for version of Sketchup?

I'm using sketchup pro 6. The free version has no exporters.

If you don't want to buy it, send me any models, Richard, and I can convert them for you.

Thanks for the offer :) I'm too bogged down to get into this at the moment but I can see some great possibilities here.
Thanks again:)

Thank you. Interesting article. Never got beyond a few video tutorials on Sketchup. Simply no time, but would love to be able to create my own buildings and most of all, throw custom textures on them. As far as the game, I am glad I do not own a game console. Would consume all of my spare time, no doubt.
