Rendering Problems

Hi all, I am having a problem with some of my larger renders.  I keep getting errors when it gets about half way done and I am not sure what I am doing wrong.  Sorry if this is a stupid question but I think that my computer should be able to handle renders like this just fine.

My Specs are
Quad core @ 3.2 GHz
16 GB's of RAM
This is on a 64 bit system.

If you guys need anymore specific specs just let me know.

The image I was trying to render was at 4000 x 3000

Render settings were

Detail : 1
AA : 8
GI relative detail : 2
GI sample quality : 2
GI blur radius : 8

Everything else is the normal starting settings except I changed my Min threads to 1 and Max threads to 4.  After reading older topics I though this might help out some but it has not.  I will post a picture of the specific errors that I am getting.

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help me out with this issue.

Firstly have you successfully rendered the scene at lower settings?
It's unlikely that your scene will need such high render settings, Detail 1, AA 8 is higher than I would ever go, especially for such a large image.
Try lower detail and AA settings, maybe detail 0.7, AA 5 (that's my general default) and see if that makes a difference. If you're not happy with the result bring up the settings a notch at a time.
Also you could drop the GI settings since they work on screen/image size. GI 2/2 on a small image is NOT THE SAME as GI 2/2 on a larger image.  On a larger image you can get away with lower settings since the sampling is "effectively" denser. I'm not explaining it well but try it, you'll see :)
Hope this helps

Thanks for such a quick response cypher.

Yes I did many test renders before hand with much lower settings.  I guess that I am just worried about getting enough detail into my scene so that it still looks good, which resulted in having to much detail.

I will try again taking the things that you said into account.

Thanks again for your help cypher, really appreciate it!  :)

Detail settings may be an issue, but while these are high, they are not what I would call excessive. That being said, it's not the whole story. I think the first thing you want to do is figure out if it may be memory-related, so you'd want to look at the Task Manager during rendering to see how high memory use is getting. Also, did you change the size of the Subdiv Cache? If so, that could be related, especially if preallocate is enabled. It would also be helpful to see a lower resolution render of the scene and to know whether there are any large object or texture map files being used.

Hi,

Just to eliminate the obvious, are you sure that you're using the 64 bit version? Does it say "System Information(64 bit):" in the splash screen or the About box?

Thanks for all the info everyone!
Just to let you guys know I have had a successful render with the lower detail settings, I was even able to render at a larger size.
I think that I am just trying to get too much detail into my renders sometimes.  It is just so tempting to use that detail of 1 setting.  ;D

I checked my memory in the task manager with my latest render and it was using about 1.5 GB's of memory.  I did not change the size of my Subdiv Cache and the setting was at 400.  I also had the preallocate unenabled.  I am a little confused with Subdiv Cache setting, this is why I have never changed it before.  Should I be changing the amount of Subdiv Cache?  What would you guys recommend?

Thanks again for all the help everyone!

Oshyan

In general we do not recommend changing the subdiv cache settings. The automatic settings usually work just fine. They're there for troubleshooting and a relatively few possible advanced scenarios, but I can tell you I rarely touch them myself.

Thanks for the advice Oshyan, I will leave the Subdiv Cache setting alone.
