I already gave this file to someone so I figured I could share it to the rest too... It's just a one way to make em.. Simple and more complicated version with the same idea, just more layers in the other.

Thanks guys. It's easily animated.. 1 translate shader to the end of the chain with Y axis rotation and some axis translates

That's super cool! Love seeing it in motion. Of course that is a *very* fast moving planet, hehe. Unless it's a lengthy time-lapse.

Yeah the experiment was a "timelapse" I was mostly testing how the fractals progress and when the swirly parts fade away or if they strengthen :P

I suggest punching some vortex shaders thru the planet like this. You can create some interesting "eye" effects. The picture is depicted from top and the eye appears on the side..
