Alright guys, calm down...

WASasquatch, why don't you just send that model over to me? Maybe I can texture it in my DAZ Studio. My mail should be visible on the forum. As far as the other ship models are concerned, the only freebies I have are small sailboats but I can see you're after tall ships, so... :D

You can try, though I have DAZ crash on me, and I guess Lightwave does too. I'll zip it up and send it. I was already planning on texturing it in TG, which is why It's imperative I get the results Kadri got with his export from poseray that I cannot reproduce. My objects are fused into one part.

That's what the original OBJ file has to offer. Apparently compressed. The exports are readable but with the fused single part under Wood

Whole file is positioning for Wood_4

Lightwave Layout can import the object. But Modeler crashes Jaf.
I exported a transformed object from Layout without a problem.

@ Kadri - What do you mean by saying that .obj file is problematic? I mean ".obj files" in general, or just the one we're discussing (well, it certainly is :) .)

@ WASasquatch - I managed to edit the ship in DAZ Studio, but it really seems like the object has just a single part (which is entire ship actually...) so you can only texture it with one image. Sorry to say this, but I'm not even going to try to brake that ship into other parts. :( I don't have enough knowledge (nor adequate software) to do that.

What I did however, was scaling the ship down to more realistic size (I compared the size with a human model). I'll send it if it's of any use, to you. By the way, Kadri is right - the object, (even in its default scale) frankly, is not that huge, neither the texture.

The bottom line is that I managed to load the ship into DAZ Studio with no crashes or troubles at all. I also managed to export it to TG as an .obj file with ease, then load it into TG and save it in .tgo format. This object I would say is really not very special or problematic. I would say that you have something peculiar going on with your programs, or maybe system, if this object is causing crashes like you've described. Maybe you could also consult someone from the Planetside to see what they'll say. Or better yet, contact the artist that created the model and ask for an "improved" version of the model?

I mean this file.

Hey WAS, I haven't run into a compressed OBJ material file before.  I've always been able to read/edit both the obj and mtl files with a text editor.

Poseray has a option to compress the OBJ file. I believe any program can. Uses GZIP.

Perhaps he renamed it to a simple obj file which is causing crashes and weird stuff in certain programs. I contacted the artist for some answers.

THe real point is he advertises the "Complete" project, which shows numerous textures. Even provides some of the painted wood. I assume metals were just solid tones with spec and such.

It looks a lot different in the header area, so I assume something is horribly wrong with his object, which should be sailboat.obj.gz to begin with. The header should not very that much as that is what tells the programs what to do with the file.

Oshyan

Yes, it really looks like something is wrong with the source object(s). Nothing should be this problematic across multiple applications.

I installed the Cinema4D demo version just to see how the object (the C4D version) looks in it.
It opened with some error messages. I think it uses Vray materials. But the textures does look right in C4D.
A C4D user might be able to export a much better UV textured OBJ file probably.

N-drju

I think the way forward here is to edit this thing in exactly the same software it was built in and get object parts right.

In my case I did not run into any problems neither in DAZ Studio nor in Terragen, though upon reading the whole topic again I was nervous if this ill-fated ghost ship screws my entire system or not. ;D

Object in question -> sailboat.obj

Loaded into LW9.0 modeler. No crash...    ...and yes, 'bout as big as a DeathStar.  :o
Reported back with 700 plus non-planular normals.
Surface listing revealed only one surface.

Part of the fun, right?   ;D
