Oil Slick

Not much to say. Working on a oil slick. I wasn't able to make a good oil slick texture via PFs that I liked so using a photoshop image for now.

My goal, hopefully, is to follow the mask with procedural PFs And functions like sin scalar to give it a more realistic look.

this is very good, agree with Hannes on the 2nd one. Are you doing this with a Merge shader like Jochen and I were playing around with for stained glass?

Yeah it's a simple photoshop cloud setup in multiple colours, used two to merge together on difference to create even more variations of colours.

Then plugged into the volume colour and density. You could go with just colour and have a 0.5 density but it's very flat and opaque, so I plugged it into density as well which needed a 50 density (:O)

I'm wondering if I can utilize my mask to create some warping to the surface tension to make it look like it's following the water well. Going to try some things.

also may want to see if you can use some of these same nodes to get sediment channels into flowing water once you finish this.

Could you explain a little more? This idea I was thinking more a slick, which is only on the surface, I do have another idea for another version which was involving a spill

Attached is latest attempts, now procedural with PFs. I'm still having issues warping it like id like. It looks decent via the preview but what is produced looks much different and hard.

Just feels to me that what you are doing has parts to it that should also go to stuff like this, although I expect that things would have to be approached differently from the beginning

Never mind the terrain part, that would shape the water and how the water flows, that is a bit of a separate issue. But in terms of the water and the color and the flow/form of the sediment color (like as with your slick) I suppose that there is some similarity to how it would be done.

There is also a thread or two on the general topic but don't know where they are right now.

Anyway, as I said probably won't want to deal with it too much until you finished what you were already working on. its Just what came to my mind when I was looking at your OP.

Good ideas I see what you are going for. That's what I had planned for another version comprising an actual oil spill rather then the lighter residue oils captured on the surface tension of the water being lighter.

This here is just oil "slicking" which is a surface tension thing because it is not actually soluble with water, so doesn't gradient.

Most oil slicks with sub surface stuff would be from the actual spill which I plan to incorporate this slick into like you were saying to make a complete... thing, I guess, in this case. Spill disaster?

I like to create shaders for all sort of instances I may need them so I can just insert clips. Why I take on these little projects.
