I have had a lot of fun playing with terragen 2  and have decided too buy it when i get the money but now that they are restricting the newest version to pre-purshasers I just don't know anymore. I hope that at least a demo of the final version will be released.

It has been clear earlier that the pre-purchasers will have some more benefits like this. I think it makes sense also since they have paid for it.
Planetside has also said that they will make a free version of it a little while after the final release. This will be for non-commercial use of course.

I voted: yes it wouldn't matter to me. This is cause I had made up my mind when I saw some of the first images in the gallery, but it was really nice to be able to download a free version when it came and test it to see if I could handle it.

I am one of the pre-purchasers...

I voted the same as Sjefen, because it wouldn't matter to me if we even didn't have the current public alpha with transparency.
I bought a license for deep and animation, just because I wanted to try it. And I'm glad I did. I think it's totally worth it.

On the other hand, I do understand your frustration about the absency of the free alpha preview.
I think it will come soon though.

So you have 2 options:
1. Wait... wait... wait....
2. Pre-Purchase...
Howgh!

I Voted Yes as well,

I pre-purchaced because I enjoy using TG 2, I use TH 2 as nothing more then a hobby, but I liked it so much I wanted to get the restrictions taken off, and have the earlier updates, and it wouldnt make a large diffrence to me,

The only thing I'd say, (I know since you said you will purchace when you have the money, which is fair enough) But If you are using the free version, it dose say very clearly, that the pre-purchasers will get the updates much more reguarly.

Then again Not giving transparency to everryone is mean :P

A demo is a moot point.  We have the opportunity already to see what it can do.  It's only going to get better from here.  These guys are talented and dedicated.  If I see anything else, I'll say so.  Anyway, this is just a rough patch...I think we're gonna be blown away.
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

We do plan to release a free version of the final, but our priority is necessarily on existing registered users. As others have said the previous Technology Previews are a reasonably good representation of what TG2 is capable of at its core. Almost all areas are being improved of course, but most new capabilities can be seen in posted images. The changes in TP3 and the upcoming beta and final releases will not be so dramatic that if you liked what Tech Preview 2 offered, you would reconsider. If TP2 was enough to convince you to buy, TP3 and on will just be a bonus. :)

Having been 'burned' by other software (as I see it) that frankly promised what it did not deliver, I don't think I would ever buy now before I've had a chance to actually see or experience the program in action. I want to know that I can use the thing myself before I part with my money.

TG2 case in point - downloaded the demo - tried a few tests, loved it, bought it.

Rhino - downloaded a demo (a couple of years ago now) - couldn't get on with it - never looked at it again. I happen to believe Rhino is a superb piece of software - I just don't get on with it.

Mudbox - downloaded a demo  - couldn't get on with it - shan't be buying it. Again no crit intended, the question is whether it works for me.

CrazyBump - downloaded the Beta, absolutely love it - might buy it when it gets released, depends on the price and my funds at the time.

Vue - downloaded  demo - liked it a lot, but not enough to pay the asking price, so waited till it went on special offer. Without having the demo to experience, I wouldn't have been able to make that decision.

so would I buy without a demo? - no.
would I be 'outraged'? - no - I just wouldn't consider taking a chance with my hard earned money.

As for things being 'unfair' to people who haven't paid a penny for the product - Huh?!!

You get to play with a fantastic piece of software absolutely free - how can you consider it 'unfair' that you don't get all the goodies?

I'm happy with my free version at the moment, I would buy if I had the cash but as a high school student money is a bit tight. as for a demo Most of the time I test the product out first either by using a demo or a pirated copy before i buy it to see if it can, in fact, improve my workflow.

My position is essentially the same as peejay 's post but with a different array of software and similar criteria. I never ever purchace software that I've only tried a fairly buggy Technogy Preview of no matter how high a regard I have for the authors. Plus as a senior I am on a fixed income so it really has to work before I buy...just my 2 cents Canadian.. ...

For me, as long as I see enough gallery work or examples of good results, I am willing to purchase the product without a demo.

will since you are a student why don't you buy it with the student discount its 129 dollars for deep without animation thats like 70 dollars of the normal price which is heaps and it so worth it!!!
just contact matt and he will tell you what to do
all you need is proof that you are a student all i did is get my computer teacher at school to send planetside an email and they accepted that as proof :)

i also get a pirated copy's before i buy my software 30days aint long enough to realy get to grips with the program or sometimes there so damn expensive!!! or sometimes i do abit of reverse engineering
i can asure you though that there are now pirated copys of terragen 2 there is though of terragen .9 im affraid i think the reason there are no pirate copys of terragen 2 is because
1 you have to buy terragen 2 deep to actually get the terragen 2 deep program
2 the terragen 2 keyfile is different from most security features such as hexagonal and dongles and spm systems
but its just a matter of time before a dishonest person puts terragen 2 deep up on warez-bb or demonoid >:(

i think getting pirated copies is fine only if you buy the program after you thoroughly tested it. but in most cases this never happens.
heres a fact
68% of people who own adobe photoshop have got it illegally!!!!

I personally don't understand this. What makes a person who bought it
just give it away to everybody for free? It just don't make any sense to me.

I'm not saying this because I am a registered user, but since I am, I can say
that I would never give it away and I don't understand people who would.

I think it has to be with sharing the wealth so to speak but anyway lets not stray too far into the great pirate debate.

you are using a free version of TG2 freely... you used it during a long time and now , because you don't have the last version you are not sure to buy it anymore ?!  :o
What do you think ? Planetside works for the free-users or for the people that give money to use their software ? Sorry if i sound harsh but that really looks like trolling to me !  :-\
What about PS free version ? Vue free version ? oh and Windows free version ? lol !!!
a lot of software just give you 30 days trial.. and limited to some part of it too.. here, no time limit...
you think you should be considered as people who pre-purchased TG2 ? just tell me why... because right now, i don't know...  ::)
welcome into a world of capitalism dude !  ;D

edit : the only reason i see you could be considered as pre-purchaser is if you use TG2 for traking bugs...

Will

Vue actually does have a free version (but its a joke you can't even save) and adobe is thinking about one (at least thats what I hear) for PS. But your point is still valid. We'll get an update eventually and if you want it now you have to pay.
