Your youngest versions are nice and well done, beautiful reddish rocks on the shore and everything,
but the first dark version has something that got lost on the way.
maybe its just the emphasis on the sky.
Luckily you don“t have to choose.

Thanks for the comments guys. I did like the sky and atmosphere in the first one, but the foreground was way too dark. I only changed the seed value by a few numbers and it opened it up a little.
I did change the leaf colour and tint for the eucalyptus and have started re-rendering, I also noticed that all the objects were set to lowest quality, so I was suprised by the outcome.
We'll see tonight when I get home hopefully  :) (This ones's a little bigger with hight quality values)

domdib - the terrain is all TG2

That's interesting. I thought TG2 was good for pointy mountains  :), but I didn't realise that these rounded mountains were also doable. Could you give a hint on how to do it? (Or better still, a clip file?)

Just used similar values to seth's tutorial. Billowy perlin, stretched on the z axis by 2. That's it!

Here is the final (I think). Rendered at 3200 x 1800 in ~25hrs, exr, tweaked in PS.
