I think he rather used it as a description, but your thoughts are right, the stones emerge from the sand. The sand layer is basically my snow-surface, except for the color of course There's around 15cm max thick sand.

Thanks you for the clarification TU, and I like this image very much.  The picture reminds me of an old Curtis photo from the thirties that showed a mounted group of Navaho indians showing as very miniturized figures on the floor of this majestic sandstone valley.
