As I said in my last post: these trees look artificial. The leaves are too dark.
Suggestions appreciated :)

Start with the leaves shader and set translucency to 1 to start. Also check the specular tab and add a little reflectivity. Check the bark texture and if its dark either lighten it up in photoshop or similar app or choose another texture.  Also turn on soft shadows if it's not already on.

Hope this helps.

These are good starting points! May I add that if your texture is too dark you don't have to lighten it up in photoshop etc.? You can use the diffuse color (0.5 default) for adjusting the brightness of your texture.

Once you have the leaves sorted, the first image is a nice composition. You might also want to make the tree distribution a bit more irregular with a blendshader.

What about the render quality of your population? It should be very high for trees.

That's true Martin, to a point. But in the case with leaves being to dark what I suggested works for me. Also I have noticed that increasing the diffuse lightness sometimes washes out the color of the texture.  If what I suggested was just a starting point I'd be interested in the rest of the process as I can never learn too much.

Good advice from Buzzzzz.  Let us see your next production.
