Hi guys,

I'm on a mission to advance the alpine fractal to a more realistic preset, that retains the overall eroded look, but  has just about the right level detail and outcrops, so that it can be surface textured more realistically, and also generally will look just like the real thing. Also, I'm preparing it to hold up against close-ups.

Here is a first shot.

Cheers,
Frank

The mountains in the background look superb!

As you know Frank, I'm looking into Alpines myself just now, so I await your work with interest. If I may be allowed one tiny criticism, I think that some more roughening of the rock surfaces would enhance realism. Excelsior!

Thanks Dominic. Thanks Darth.

In the final preset, one will be able to adjust the amount of roughness / outcrops. Well, I can already do that now, but will have to clean up the network eventually.
I've chosen this particular amount (for this render) deliberately. During my experiements, I figured that looking at reference photos, that there is no "ideal" roughness for alpine scenes, rather a pretty big variety. So I've built the network that the roughness can be adjusted on various levels.

Cheers,
Frank

I should've known you'd already have all the angles covered  ;)

like I said before, Frank, I find this intriguingly beautiful!...exquisite!

looks wonderful, :) :) :) :) :)

is that horizontal line going across the mountain supposed to be a road?,
well what ever it is i think its an iteresting addition to the piece

Different; Excellent also!

Love the POv

The trees really make the scale apparent. I like the pinkish glow in the atmosphere also; a cloud layer colored for the effect?

Very nice mountain shapes. The trees look good. I'm not sure about that horizontal line though. Maybe it's supposed to be a road.

I wish you could invert all the scalloped shapes in the alpine fractal and still retain hill shapes. Of course this would not be alpine but I just wish you could do that.

Here are a few other renders from the Alpine Preset Pack. These are made during development, but I thought you might be interested regardless...

The third one is showing a close-up on one of the lower third outcrops.

and one more.... this one has more roughness / displacement

Hi Frank

The last one ist the very best!

Thanks. I don't think the last one is the best... well, at least not with regards to retaining the alpine shapes. But the beauty of the setup is that one can choose how much "alpine" you want.

The third one with the strata bump is really good. I like it. It's also similar to my latest voronoi experiment. Your's is much better, and almost the look I was trying for.
