Hi Guys.... Another attempt at creating strata. It's a combo of the tutorial TU gave us (big thanks Martin) and Volker's Cracks (oh er matron and big thanks). It's no where near finished, but I like the crispy flaky strata effect going on here.... please don't touch it as it will crumble and may cause a landslide. ;D Pops and other bits to be added yet.

Again suggestions and comments welcome as usual...
Cheers, Simon.
I just need to tweak that texture a bit more...

Seth

good looking start.
some colours' variation might be a good idea.
Do you plan to add some vegetation or water ?
some reflectivity to the rocks ?

littlecannon

Hi Seth... Thanks and all that is to come, specular, trees etc. really just working on the rock structure at the moment.... Question: what is the best way to add specular? By using the reflective shader, or default shader? My quip with the default shader is that you cannot turn the colour off... or can you somehow?
Cheers, Simon.

personnally i use the reflective shader almost all the time.
just think to uncheck the "ray traced reflections" box or it will take for ever to render.
and remember that reflectivity can sometimes changes the colours of your surface ;)

This looks good to me, but I agree with more colors being needed. Why not use a surface shader and plug the reflective shader into it; maybe a distribution shader would work better?

It looks like slate rock which is not really specular at all unless it just rained there or has more quartz in it then usual. For colors some reds and brown greys would look nice. Even purple, green or cyan would work but nothing rich in color but more along the earthy greying hue of a color.

For just being in its early stages of creation, I'd say you've got a real goody going here.

Cheers, guys... another update. I know the trees look awful, they're just to show some scale at the moment.

Hi

Rocks and cracks are great.

A small water on the ground could be nice.

I want to climb and look for fossils. The gray color added to the cliffs works very well. I like the water shader (if you have not noticed :D), so I agree with a little water. Perhaps in water cut pools, but the river bed itself dry.

you definitely need more colour variation on the rock. and some reflectivity (hehe)

Hi Simon,

Any chance of getting a clip file of this rock structure? Thanks,

Bob

Thanks peeps...

Seth: There is a bit (reflectivity) on there already, but it's just not showing enough yet, I'll also play with the colouring a bit more in another version as I do quite like the colour of the rock as it is.... more tinkering needed.

Bob: Sure as soon as I tidy it up... it's a mess at the moment.

Naoo and njeneb: I'm thing about painting in a river bed... dry/wet... not sure on that one yet and there are some great fossils there... wouldn't mind hunting some down myself.

Cheers, Simon.

interesting displacements LC  :)
it must be a long drop to the bottom of the canyon judging from the scale of those trees.  :o
personally i think the surface at the bottom looks sorta plain.

Thanks Z.... the bottom is a bit plain at the moment... I am just setting up a load of rocks at the base of the cliffs, like they crumbled off and fell there.
Cheers, Simon.
