A slightly lower heightfield is not enough; it still has the bumps that cause a river, at close view, to look unnatural. Water angling sideways. From a distance it's no problem. It can partly be 'flattened' by using smooth terrain and a larger patch in compute terrain, but that's still not enough, as you can see from my original posting. More work to do. At the location of the river, the heights perpendicular to the flow of the river should be measured and given a mean value, that should be sufficient in my opinion. But how to do that....
