My first scene

G'day everyone. I've done some of the various tutorials I've found through these forums (thanks to those who created them), and decided to have a go at creating a scene of my own.

I'm not sure how to add an image to this post, so I'll just create a link.

I'm using the Monterey Pine, California Red Fir, and Cornflower models from Xfrog. The one question I have is, do the models have their own internal size?? I placed the Fir and Pines, then added the Cornflower but, the Cornflowers were almost the same size as the trees! I changed the object scale down to 0.02 and it looks much more proportionate. Is that the norm, or is it just a glitch in the cornflower model?

Anyway, once I had it all set up, I decided to take a walk through my new virtual world and render an image from a different prespective.

It doesn't come close to the images I have seen from you guys, but I'm pretty pleased with my efforts. Especially since I've only had the full version of Terragen for less than a week.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Sorry for the external links. Could someone explain how to attach an image to the post? I tried a couple of times but nothing appeared in the preview.

Niall

hey niall! good work man. i'm definitely liking the second image, the one with the cornflowers. that's a really nice view. i'm in the same boat as you man, i've only been fiddling with terragen for a few days so i know how it feels when looking at all these photorealistic renders these guys are doing. i also used corn flowers for my first project im working but they don't seem to look as good as yours. as far as the whole scaling thing goes, i have the same problem, like my plants come out super tiny or almost as big as the trees in the scene. im not sure exactly why, but i just do like you said and scale them up or down until they look right.

also, you were asking about how to attach images, well i've just been using an outside host like flickr then when posting a message there's a little icon right above the smiley faces, with a square picture fram on it, click that and it will put the IMG tags in your post. then just post the link to your image right between the tags and your image will show up in the post.

i have seen some people posting direct attachments but i dont see that option anywhere unless im blind as a bat.

but back to the images, nice work man for just starting out!

edit: i just noticed when doing a reply, right below this message box there's a linkk that says additional options, click that and there will be the option to add attachments.

Welcome , Niall .
Your second image is a big step in the right direction. It is really good  :)

Beeuteeful work, Niall, and welcome!  I'm especially enjoying your 2nd render.  Vegetation and trees are wonderful, great perspective..and I like your composition very much.  My compliments.  Linda

Well done on both images, the second one is definitely the better of the two but you're off to a strong start to be sure. To spice up your terrain try adding some smaller scale displacements. That will help clean up the mountains in the background and add some interest to the foreground in both images. It certainly seems that you've got a good grasp on the populations for being your first go around. As for the scale, I've always just assumed (particularly with Xfrog products) that the models are scaled the appropriate size in the first place but scaling them up and down depending on your scene is a pretty common thing I think.

You're off to a great start I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Hi Niall
Great renders, especially the second.

Uploading an image direct from your hard drive:
Click on Additional Options
you'll then see an Attach input box with a Browse button to its right.
click the Browse button and locate your image on your hard drive.
If you've got more than one image to upload, click on more attachments.
When you've finished click on Post.

I hope I realise I don't exist before I apparently die.

I like both of your images. The second one seems to stand out better. Nice work. Also, welcome to the forum!

The composition of the second image is good, and doing a close-up on the Xfrog models allows their quality to shine. Welcome!

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.

The second image is my favorite too. And it was just a lucky fluke, with some fine tuning. I was showing off my firts image, to friends and family, and wanted to hilight the fact that this was a 3D model. So, I just randomly selected a few different angles, and came up with this. I rotated, and lifted, the camera a bit, to frame out a tree.

I think it just goes to show how amazing Terragen is. I have done a bit of photography; I'm not that good, but I have sold a few. With this program, and some good models, I can create my own wilderness to walk around in. I can take my virtual camera with me and, if needed, I can move a mountain or two to get a better shot. :)

Attaching Images: Thanks! I can see that option as I write this.

NWsenior07: Yeah! I wanted to do some more work on the mountains. They are really just the base colors and a white shader, with slope and altitude constraints, for snow. I'm going to borrow some tips from some of the tutorials I've read, and see how it turns out.

I plan to do more work on both images.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Niall
