Large area.

I thought I had the atmo samples high enough for the Godrays to show properly. I'll try again.

The sun needs to be just partially covered by the cloud layer, either above or below. I rotate my view so I can see the sun cross. When the preview has rendered, pause the update. Now adjust the cross so the horizontal piece sits just on the clouds edge.
This works easier when the low part of the cloud is intersected.

I LOVE the shadow and lighting on the ground! This rocks, but I do wish the rays themselves stood out a bit more. Unfortunately I've only produced one or two Godray scense and those were by accident. Keep going, I enjoys watching you work  :)

High atmosphere settings and strong light are key. I like the distribution of the stones.

Godray *visibility* isn't so much affected by sample levels. Sample levels effect quality. You need to adjust your scene construction if godrays aren't showing up right.

Indeed, I also would like to add that you also don't need ray traced shadows in atmosphere to get godrays.
